What to Do In Salt Lake City

Added: 05/06/2006

We'll let you in on a little secret: Salt Lake City has been quietly developing into a world-class destination, but no one outside this high desert town has figured that out yet. Since the Mormons stumbled into the valley in 1847 after they were chased out of much of the eastern US, Salt Lake City earned a reputation as a town of religious zealots, quietly worshiping, singing hymns and eschewing tea, coffee and alcohol, though this image is not already actual.

Since the Mormons  stumbled into the valley in 1847 after they were chased out of much of the eastern US, Salt Lake City earned a reputation as a town of religious zealots, quietly worshiping, singing hymns and eschewing tea, coffee and alcohol, though this image is not already actual.

The fame came in Salt Lake City in 2002, when the Olympic Winter Games brought plenty of media attention to the city, highlighting the area's scenic wonders. The city sits at the base of the magnificent Wasatch Range - a jagged series of snow-capped mountain peaks - and borders one of the most deserted lovely places in the country.

The Olympic 2002 Host lies in its geographic location - it's a metropolitan area of 1.5 million people, surrounded by wide-open spaces, within easy reach of renowned skiing and a host of other outdoor activities. Not surprisingly, sport is the second "religion" in Salt Lake City - the area was conceived by Nature like an outdoor enthusiast's dream with all the lakes, fairways, and nature trails you'll need for golfing, fishing, boating,  kayaking and whatnot else.

Though of course sport activities are important, visitors have also much more interesting to do in Salt Lake City. Of course, you will not find in Salt Lake City great number of casinos or nightclubs, though there is much more to do in Salt Lake City than just wonder its architecture and Cathedrals. The city founded on faith, and that dominates still - downtown is virtually deserted on Sundays, when most shops and restaurants close.

Downtown in Salt Lake City can easily be explored on foot. There is a very workable public bus system, which includes a Free Fare Zone covering downtown and Capitol Hill, as well as round-trip service to the ski resorts. North Temple, South Temple, and West Temple, all bordering Temple Square, are most prominent streets in Salt Lake City.

Temple Square itself includes the impressive Gothic-style building, nonbelievers aren't permitted inside, but you can admire the awe-inspiring structure at a distance. Besides, events and attractions taking place in Salt Lake City if not daily, still very frequent, are free.  There are other sights to be seen in Salt Lake City, including the Place Heritage Park, Ballet West Building, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and many others deserve your attention.

But it is not the magnificent the Utah Symphony and Opera perform at the classy Abravanel Hall or the unique collection of paintings, sculptures and touring exhibits in the Utah Museum of arts that make tourist from all over the word come in Salt Lake City for a Salt Lake City tourism activities..  In fact, these are Great lakes attracting crowds of them annually.

The Great Salt Lake may be a scientific mystery, but its jade and azure expanse draws tourists, artists and water enthusiasts as well. Seventeen miles northwest of Salt Lake City, the lake is nearly 90 miles long and 50 miles wide.  It doesn't support much marine life (brine shrimp are a notable exception) but Antelope Island National Park located in the Southwestern portion of the lake supports bison, bighorn sheep and plenty of waterfowl. For those who prefer sun to safari, the Great Salt Lake also has several beaches for sunbathing.
