Denver, the capital of Colorado, was established by a party of prospectors on November 22, 1858, after a gold discovery at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. Before the great Colorado gold rush, the Rocky Mountains offered little to attract settlers, except "hairy bank notes," the beaver pelts prized by fur trappers, traders and fashionable gentlemen in Eastern America and Europe. The gold rush changed that, as the rudely dispossessed Cheyenne and Arapaho soon discovered...
With an average of 300 days of sunshine, Denver is a favorite for those who love the outdoors. Denver has 90 golf courses and 650 miles of paved bicycle trails and 3 sports stadiums for its 500,000 residents and visitors. Denver has a long history of beer brewing and today boasts some 80 home brewed brands. The city of Denver is also the gateway to ski resorts of the central Rockies. Locals flock to A-Basin, Keystone, and Loveland resorts. Winterpark and Keystone are a slightly longer drive and have more accommodations for overnight guests.

Denver has a host of museums - including the Colorado History Museum, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and the Denver Firefighters Museum. Tours in Denver can be taken at the United States Mint and of the Coors Brewing Company. Both the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Denver Zoo are very popular.
Dining in Denver offers everything from gourmet cuisine to the delightful fare found in the many pubs that dot the city. Morton's of Chicago is famous for its prime rib and porterhouse steaks. Denver's oldest restaurant, the Buckhorn Exchange, a favorite of Buffalo Bill, also has great steaks. For Tex-Mex fare, the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant is the place to go. The Wynkoop Brewing Co. is a brew pub with a very popular beer.
If arriving in Denver by air, you will land at the Denver International Airport (DIA). The 23-mile ride to downtown will take about 45 minutes. Taxis and shuttles are available. There are city buses with pick-ups every hour. Driving is easy in Denver, but parking is not and parking lots are expensive.
