Welcome to Japan Kyoto University

Added: 11/25/2005

Kyoto University rates second in the list of top Asian universities. It is also known as the second university to be established in Japan. For many years the university has been thought of as one of the leading universities in the country due to its research facilities. Regarded as the main rival of the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University has produced more Nobel prize winners and top scientists than any other educational establishment.

Japan Kyoto University was founded on June 18, 1897 as a part of the Imperial University system. Its predecessor was the Chemistry School, established in Osaka in 1869. Seventeen years later the Third Higher School was established in its place, which moved to the main campus of the university the same year. Shortly after Japan Kyoto University foundation the College of Science and Technology was founded.

The activities of the university expanded with the establishment of the College of Law and College of Medicine in 1899 and the College of Letters in 1906. Within the years that followed College of Science and Engineering was opened, the dividing of which gave the university its estimated five colleges. Under the Imperial University law, which came into effect in 1919 the colleges were reorganized into faculties, comprising the Faculties of Medicine, Law, Engineering, Letters and Science.

In May 1920 the Faculty of Economics was established. In 1919 a system for the election of University Presidents by the faculty members was adopted, reflecting their striving for more autonomy. In October 1947 Kyoto Imperial University changed its name to Kyoto University. According to the National School Establishment Law, adopted in May 1949, Japan Kyoto University was reorganized from three-year to four-year university. Shortly afterwards the Third High School was affiliated to the university, which has been offering education in the liberal arts since 1897.

Founded in April 1953, the Japan Kyoto University Graduate School System provides post-graduate education in the Graduate Schools of Education, Law, Economics, Letters, Science, Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In accordance with the amendment of the Education Law, the Graduate School of Medicine was established in 1955.

Since 1960 the university has been facing many changes: the division of the Faculty of Medicine in 1962 into two institutions: the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Studies, as well as reorganization of the College of Liberal Arts into the tenth Faculty under the name the Faculty of Integrated Human Studies. For the last few years the university has been attaching more importance to the activities on the graduate level.

This resulted in the establishment of the new graduate schools, including the Graduate Schools of Energy Science, Human and Environmental Studies, African and Asian Area Studies, Informatics, Global Environmental Studies and Biostudies.

As of 2005 Japan Kyoto University comprises 10 Faculties, 13 Research Institutes, 16 graduate schools and 21 Research and Educational Centers.

The university consists of three campuses, located in Yoshida, Uji and Katsura. The Yoshida Campus is regarded as the core of university's activities. It is home to many research institutes, centers and testing facilities.

Kyoto City is considered to be a core of education and research of the country. It occupies leading position due to its numerous educational and scientific establishments, the most prominent of which are Kyoto University, Kyoto Sangyo University and Kyoto City University.
