Welcome to Forsyth Park, One of the Prominent Sites of Savannah

Added: 01/10/2006

Established originally on ten acres of land in the historic district of Savannah, Forsyth Park expanded significantly in the 1850s. In 1851 it was named in honor of John Forsyth, then Georgia Governor. Today the park is seen as one of the most popular tourist destinations, mainly due to its majestic fountain, constructed in 1858 and the Fragrant Garden for the Blind. Forsyth Park is a great addition to any vacation itinerary in the great state of Georgia!

The history of Forsyth Park dates back to the 1840s, when William Hodgson donated ten acres of wooded land for the establishment of the first recreational park in Savannah. The original landscape design was created by William Bischoff, followed by some improvements in the early 1850s. Regarded as the largest park in Savannah, Forsyth Park is also one of the oldest and most active parks of the city.

Created more than a century ago, it is still a success with tourists, proudly maintaining its trademark original style as it has for so many years. The park is home to a number of memorials and monuments of prominent figures, which determines its position as a center of many events of historical significance. The largest and most conspicuous among the park's monuments is that constructed to honor all the victims of the Civil War. In one corner of Forsyth Park there is a special garden, known as the "Fragrant Garden for the Blind", while the famous fountain, added to the park in 1858 can be found in the other corner.

It should be mentioned, that Forsyth Park has not only historical value. On sunny weekend afternoons it features Frisbee, softball and football games, as well as a great number of skateboard artists and walkers. Whether you want to enjoy a picnic with your family and friends, take in the beauty of flora and fauna or learn more on historical past of the city, Forsyth Park is a perfect choice, attracting people of all cultures and ages.

One of the most famous parks attractions is the Mansion on Forsyth Park, which houses more than 400 pieces of original artwork along with Brazilian mahogany and Italian onyx marble. Located within the Historic District of Savannah, this luxurious hotel embodies the design and architecture of the original Victorian Georgian Mansion, which now houses Casmir's cocktail lounge, 700 Drayton Restaurant, 700 Kitchen Cooking School and Carriage Wine Cellar. The elegant 126 room hotel is seen as the jewel of Forsyth Park, featuring world class technology and amenities.

Services available within the Mansion on Forsyth Park include the relaxation of the enclosed Marble Garden, the luxurious Poseidon Spa and more. In addition to the Viennese Ballroom and Marble Garden Courtyard, there are six private galleries, designed for special occasions. For corporate and social events the park has meeting facilities with Antique Mirror and Italian Marble.

In addition to Forsyth Park, Georgia boasts a number of other sites, attracting visitors worldwide. One of the most famous among these is Barnsley Gardens Resort, located in Adairsville, Georgia. In the 1840s it was estate of Godfrey Barnsley, who had realized the visions of the well-known architect Andrew Jackson Downing. Today the Barnsley Gardens Resort is famous for heirloom gardens, surrounding the ruins of the grand house and featuring facilities for visitor's recreation. Established in the mid 1850s, the estate has been benefited from continuous renovation and upkeep. In 1988 it was purchased by Prince Hubertus Fugger, who contributed greatly to the restoration of the Historic Gardens. Today Barnsley is a popular destination with world-class amenities, luxurious cottages and excellent service.
