Kinross is a fairly small town, formerly the county town of Kinross-shire that proud its history heritage and places of interest. Situated in the picturesque hills Kinross-shire is the ideal place for active rest such as hill walking, golf, cycling, fishing, bird watching or just relaxing and delighting with the beauty of Scotland. Being a small town it attracts rather big number of tourists every season with its castles, churches, gardens as well as rather comfortable and easy Kinross hotels.
Of course, Kinross doesn't really boast of touristy stuff, but among its sights there are several salts worth of visiting and admiration: Blair Castle, Castle Menzies, Elcho Castle, Huntingtower Castle, Loch Leven Castle, Dunkeld Cathedral, Bolfracks Garden, Dirnanean Garden, Vane Farm, etc. Of course it's not a complete list of Kinross sights, but probably these ones are the most important, interesting and amazing.
Nowadays Blair Castle is the most visited Perthshire's Five Star historic home, famous for its grounds and gardens, and one of the Great Houses of Scotland. It is the ancient seat of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl and home to the last remaining private army in Europe - the Atholl Highlanders. Blair Castle can boasts of owning a collection that fills over 30 rooms and represents a portrays life over 700 years. In Britain there are few historic houses that can present a more comprehensive family treasure collection than Blair Castle.
Castle Menzies is one of the finest samples of 16th century fortified tower house. Later this tower house was perfectly reconstructed into mansion house architecture of which is still fascinating. Inside Castle Menzies there are several family portraits and some furniture that are the part of a clan museum.
Set on the banks of the River Tay, Elcho Castle is an amazing and handsome 16th century fortified mansion. Architectural construction is completed with three projecting towers. The main feature of this castle is original protecting wrought-iron grilles. These skilful and firm grillers are the representatives of those times, morals and manners.
Huntingtower Castle is a construction that includes built in the 15th and 16th centuries two complete towers joined by a range in the 17th century. The highlight of this wonderful architecture masterpiece is a fine painted ceiling in the hall of the eastern tower. James VI is said to have been captivated by these splendid painted ceilings for 10 months.
Loch Leven Castle is a late 14th building that has long and rich history. Since its foundation, it had been listed as one of the Royal Castles along with Edinburgh, Stirling and Dumbarton. For much of the 14th century, Loch Leven Castle served as a State Prison, the most popular prisoner of which was Mary Queen of Scots. Dunkeld Cathedral was founded by Celtic monks when they set up a mission base. Having been here for about 1400 years it is still used for worship. Inside decoration is really stunning!
A historic walled Bolfracks Garden occupies nearly four acres with splendid views of the Tay Valley. The garden possesses great amount of vegetation - Most of the trees and many of the shrubs are labeled. Here you will be able even to buy some of the limited number of plants. It is a wonderful and interesting place for rest and looking round. Dirnanean Garden is a 1.5 hectare gardens and 7 hectares of policies. Located 1,000 feet above sea level, Dirnanean Garden provides the magnificent scenery of surrounding hills. Due to the altitude, gardens are extremely different in winter, spring, summer and autumn. Visitors have an opportunity to enjoy captivating walks through the vegetable kingdom of Dirnanean Garden.
Set in the beautiful Kinross countryside, Vane Farm nature reserve is an ideal place for everyone, especially for the enthusiastic birdwatcher. Stunning range of wildlife experiences has made Vane Farm one of the most popular nature reserves in Scotland. Vane Farm nature reserve is part of the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve and is also situated near the Loch providing birds with surrounding wet grassland. The highlight of this reserve is the possibility to view the wild nature in its own habitat. The star species are some of the most interesting birds visitors may see on their visit to Vane Farm nature reserve: Lapwings, Pink-footed geese, Shovelers and Tufted ducks.
