Thassos, Greece is one of the islands of the Northeastern Aegean. The Island of Thassos is a real treasure for the country of Greece. Thassos is an attractive place with beautiful sandy beaches and traditional villages with incredible mountain vistas. However, the Island of Thassos has much more to offer than just beautiful beaches and water. It truly retains all the Greek culture and tradition that has generally been lost on most of the Greek Islands. In Thassos, a rich history and archeological sites are scattered all throughout the island. Thassos is also the only island that lies close enough to mainland Greece to allow you to take excursions to many other archeological sites and beautiful cities that are spread throughout Northern Greece.
The island of Thassos is incredibly charming with its beautiful mountainous villages. They are very picturesque and unspoiled by mass tourism. The traditional architecture of the island in Greece can be seen there as well as the local atmosphere. The capital of the island, Limenas, is an attractive place with interesting archaeological sites. It is built where the ancient city stood, and there are many ruins to admire. There is also an ancient theatre, which is often used to this day. You can also visit a very nice museum of archaeology and the Thassos Folklore Museum here. There are some charming coastal villages and a few busy touristy resorts in Thassos as well.
In Panagia you can visit the Dragoncave (Drakotrypa). The monastery of the Archangel Michael is open to visitors, but but only the properly dressed are allowed inside: long trousers for men, long skirts and covered shoulders for women.
Thassos is also an ideal island for those seeking peacefulness and a beautiful natural environment; but it also has busier places, more touristy beaches and a quite intense nightlife. There are more beaches in Thassos than on any other Greek Islands. Many of the beaches have trees coming all the way down to the beach. Apart from the developed complex on Makriammos beach and several campsites, there are fine, spotlessly clean beaches all along the island's coastline. The beauty of the sea is reflected in the crystal-clear waters that wash its shores. Environmental pollution is unknown here. Everything remains in a pristine state. Some of the beaches have water sports. You can also go horse riding on the island, and there are also tennis courts.
After a relaxing day lying on the soft sand near the crystalline sea, it is possible to go in one of the many taverns or restaurants in Thassos for an excellent meal. Most of the food served is very good, traditional Greek. The various clubs are all over the place for finishing the night with loud music, dance and drinks. You'll find some bars and clubs in Limenas that are really nice. Since it is such a popular resort among the Greeks the nights usually get very long, but not too wild. In a few words, the island of Thassos in Greece is perfect for everyone and has a lot to offer. Everyone who sets foot on Thassos will be amazed by its beauty.
