University of Tokyo is a Top Asian University

Asian universities have gained the reputation of leading educational centers worldwide. They make themselves conspicuous due to their high indicators of academic and research performance. Among the top Asia universities the University of Tokyo ranks highest. It is also considered to be one of the top twenty world universities according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Institute of Higher Education.

Today the University of Tokyo is known as a leading university in Asia and the most prestigious university in Japan.


The University of Tokyo was founded in 1877 under its current name. However in 1886, when the imperial system was created, it was renamed to Imperial University. In 1947 it assumed its original name again.


Many famous politicians, top scientists and Nobel prize winners have graduated from the university. The excellence of the university's faculty and students is known worldwide. It has about 2,800 professors, associate professors and lecturers. Out of 30,000 university students 2,100 are foreign, which is a large fraction by Japanese standards.

The university offers courses in all academic disciplines at undergraduate and graduate levels. There are nine faculties within the university: Law, Medicine, Engineering, Science, Literature, Economics, Agriculture, Education and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The most prominent faculties are those of Literature and Law. The university's traditional graduate schools include Medicine, Engineering, Humanities and Sociology, Law and Politics, Agricultural and Life Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Economics, Education, Mathematical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

There are also two kinds on shared facilities within the university. One is established to promote collaborative education and research and is open to all scholars of the University of Tokyo. The second facility focuses on special goals and is open to all scholars of Japan. The library system of the university is composed of 55 libraries, which are affiliated with the institutes, faculties and graduate schools. The library system includes nearly 8 million books, periodicals and rare publications.


The University Museum of the University of Tokyo aims at contributing to science and society. Founded in 1966, the University Museum has acquired a reputation of the solid institution, which stimulates academic research. The museum's staff consists of three associate professors, three assistant professors and one foreign visiting associate professor.

The museum's departments include the Department of Museum Collection Utilization Studies, the Department of Curatorial Studies and the Department of Museum Informatics and Media Studies. The main objectives of the museum are collecting natural and cultural objects, organizing exhibitions and making all the material accessible for education and research.


The university's five campuses are located in Komaba, Hongo, Kashiwa, Shirokane and Nakano. Hongo campus is the main one, containing most of the graduate schools, faculties and research institutes. The newest campus is the Kashiwa campus, located in Kashiwa City and containing the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the Institute for Solid State Physics and the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research.


While the University of Tokyo is considered to be one of the most prestigious schools, its main rivals Kyoto University, Waseda University and Keio University try to keep pace with it. The city of Tokyo is also known for Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, which is dedicated to the study of foreign languages and their related cultures.
