Travel school?s certificate as a gateway to travel and tourism industry

Added: 11/21/2005

At travel schools students learn the fundamentals of business along with specific travel-related skills, such as computerized ticketing and planning international trips. Travel schools try to maintain state-of-the-art travel training programs by continuously adapting their curriculum and methodology to meet current industry demands. Entry-level career opportunities are available with travel agencies, airlines, cruise lines, hotels, resorts and convention bureaus.

Travel and tourism is the world's largest industry, employing over two hundred million people or one in every nine workers. The industry is expected to support more than three hundred and fifty million jobs by the end of the year 2005. It is the second largest employer in the United States and the countries' number one service export. The field of travel and tourism training has received something of a boost in recent years due to the strengthening of various economies around the world, fuelling an international student demand.

Choosing a career in a travel school can be an exciting and rewarding experience for those, who have a thirst for travel. Some individuals choose to take a program for career exploration or personal fulfillment. The majority of graduates prefer positions of leisure or corporate travel consultants, reservationists or ticket agents. The others combine their travel training with prior education, interests or expertise. These courses are often the first step towards further training in the field.

Whether you are at the very beginning of your travel career or a seasoned veteran, a travel school offers students comprehensive web-based tourism training programs that span a whole range of education levels. They are created by travel experts to provide students with the knowledge and/or the skills necessary to begin or continue a travel career. They are designed to ensure that students receive the most intensive, up-to-date express education and practical preparation for careers in today's travel industry.  All required textbooks, learning aids and software are included. A complete student support is available by phone, mail and e-mail. A certificate is awarded to students, who successfully complete a number of courses, comprising Travel Agent Certificate Program, Tour Operator Certificate, Airline Certificate Program, etc. An approach to independent learning, flexible scheduling, time framing and innovative methods of communication, allows students of a travel school to make their learning self-paced.

For students, who already have a first degree or postgraduate courses in travel and tourism is an obvious gateway into the industry. Indeed, a demand for such courses has increased so much in recent years that some universities and travel schools, like Oxford Brookes University, have increased its course provision in this area. The MSc in International Travel and Tourism Management has been introduced recently and is aimed at students with no previous experience in the industry. Keeping up with the changing demands of the industry is an important priority for all course providers.

At New College Nottingham, a travel school, it has led to a greater diversity among the subject areas covered and skills taught by the educational travel courses on offer. Travel and tourism is no longer simply about package holidays, though it contains government strategies, socio-economic factors, environmental considerations and, certainly, a constantly growing client base/market segmentation.

A work experience or internships are an important component of many travel and tourism courses and often prove to be an important route into the employment market for students. In cooperation with other segments of the travel industry, a school administrator, admissions personnel or instructors make every effort to inform employers in writing or verbally of graduating students, available for potential employment. However, the employment cannot be guaranteed, this assistance is offered to all the students, who have satisfied all academic and financial obligations with a travel school.
