Launched in 1996 as one of the Sabre Holdings subsidiaries, Travelocity has established itself as a leading provider of travel services for business and leisure travelers. The company distributes services and products directly to customers through its numerous contact centers and brands; including World Choice Travel, Site59.com and Showtickets.com just to name a few. Travelocity's customers are provided with access to pricing information and special offers concerning hotels, airlines, cruise lines, car rental companies, and other travel-related services. Business travelers are provided with the integrated online corporate travel technology, in addition to the online expertise of Travelocity Travel Agency.
One of the leaders in the travel and tourism industry, Travelocity was the first company that provided its customers with the opportunity to not only access schedule and fare information of Sabre Holdings, but also reserve and purchase tickets and book-packaged vacations, cruises, rental cars and hotel rooms.
In 2000, Travelocity Travel Agency merged with another web-travel company -Preview Travel, with Sabre Holdings continuing to own nearly 70% of voting rights and 30% of the combined stock of the company. Following the increased competition from Orbitz and Expedia, Sabre Holdings decided to remerge Travelocity business as its subsidiary. In 2002, Travelocity Travel Agency purchased Site59.com, a travel web site specializing in last minute travel packages.
In April 2003 the founder and CEO of Site59, Michele Peluso joined Travelocity as senior vice president and became its President and CEO in December 2003. Under his tenure, the company developed a merchant hotel business, a private-label distribution network, and dynamic packaging functionality. As of 2005, a number of members of Site59 management team hold senior management positions in Travelocity Travel Agency, including Chief Marketing Officer Jeffrey Glueck, President of Travelocity Europe Damon Tassone, Senior Vice President of Last Minute Deals Tracey Weber, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development Richard Harris, Vice President of Software Development Josh Hartmann and Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Jonathan Perkel.
