Top Universities in Asia Meet All the Requirements

Taking into account such indicators of academic and research performance as the number of Nobel laureates and researchers, articles published in Science and Nature and academic performance per faculty, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Institute of Higher Education has worked out the list of world top universities. Among the top ten are Stanford University, Harvard University, California Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, University of California at Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, Princeton University, University of Oxford and Columbia University.

Out of five top universities in Asia four are Japanese, with Tokyo University ranking the highest. Number nine in the top list is the National University of Singapore, which is considered to be top in Southeastern Asia. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is considered to be the best Hong Kong university. Other Asia best universities include Kyoto University, Osaka University, Tohoku University, Hebrew University Jerusalem, Hokkaido University, Kyushu University, Nagoya University, Tel Aviv University and Tsukuba University.


Among top universities in Asia Tokyo University is ranked as leading and the most prestigious. Five campuses of Tokyo University are located in Hongo, Komaba, Shirokane, Kashiwa and Nakano. The university has ten faculties with a total of 30,000 students. Though almost all academic disciplines are taught at the university, it is prominent for its faculties of Law and Literature. Founded in 1877, Tokyo University has been holding its established solid reputation all these years. It has produced a great number of top Japanese politicians and scientists.


The second among top universities in Asia is Kyoto University, which ranks 22 in the world. It is regarded as the second oldest university and one of leading universities of the country. The university has three campuses in Katsura (Kyoto), Yoshida (Kyoto) and Gokasho (Uji). The main campus is located in Yoshida. Kyoto University has a total of nearly 22,000 students.


The list of top universities in Asia includes Osaka University, a public coeducational research university, which is located in Osaka, Japan. The history of the university goes back to the 1869, the year when Osaka Prefecture Medical School was founded. In 1919 it transformed into Osaka Medical College and in 1931 it became the part of Osaka Imperial University, which was renamed as Osaka University in 1947.

Originally containing five faculties, Osaka University has expanded to include 10 faculties, 5 research institutes, 14 graduate schools, the School of Health and Sport Sciences, the Faculty of Language and Culture, research institutes and libraries. Osaka University has a total of 20,000 students and nearly 4,500 administrative and teaching stuff.
Tohoku University ranges fifth in the list of Asia best universities.

Located in Sendai, Tohoku region, Tohoku University is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in Japan. It contains ten faculties, the most prominent of which are those of Literature, Law and Economics. As of 2003 Tohoku University had a total of nearly 15,000 students. From the very outset of its development the university has been maintaining its uniqueness, showing strong loyalty to science. This has resulted in the success of the University in the sphere of scientific research as well as cultivation of brilliant students.


Taking into consideration the facts stated above we can account on the Japan's leading position and domination in the Asian sphere of education and culture.
