Today's longest roller coasters - what and where they are

Added: 02/25/2006

While there are thousands of roller coasters worldwide, not many of them are famous for some distinctive features. The first coaster of a particular kind, style or material, historical significance or the first use of unique technology can include these features. Those, which make a particular significance, fix the designer's name in centuries and bring millions of visitors to the amusement park.

The world's longest roller coasters are determined by the total track length of one circuit of the ride. The coasters to be mentioned here are not a complete list of the longest roller coasters worldwide, though these are the most famous steel roller coasters.

•The Steel Dragon 2000, located in Nagashima Spa Land, Nagashima, Mie, Japan. The coaster is 8133 ft long. The Japan Steel Dragon 2000 is a new record-breaker (the position was held by the Millennium Force in Ohio a little bit earlier)tops off all other world roller coasters in weight, speed and length and goes down as the new record-setter at 318' in height, 95-mph in speed and 8,133' in length. The Steel Dragon 2000 features a thirty six person ride that drops 93.5 meters (307 feet) from its highest point of 97 meters (318 feet) at a sixty eight degree angle. To the rider, this angle virtually looks and feels like a vertical drop. This Giga-Coaster comes from D.H. Morgan Manufacturing (now known as Chance-Morgan), which previously designed over two hundred coasters.

•The Daidarasaurus, Expoland, Suita, Osaka, Japan is recently extended to 7677 ft. (2340 meters), thus becoming the second of the longest roller coasters in the world.

•The Ultimate, located in Lightwater Valley, Ripon, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom is 7442 ft. The Ultimate was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for been the world's longest roller coaster for ten years from 1991 to 2001. The Ultimate takes passengers on a five minute fifty second ride along 7542 ft (2.3 km) of a tubular steel track with two lift hills of 107 and 157 ft (33 and 48 m) respectively. The park's original owner, Robert Staveley, designed the Ultimate.

• The Fujiyama, Fuji-Q Highlands, FujiYoshida-shi, Yamanashi, Japan is 6708 ft. Fujiyama was complete in 1996 as a roller coaster with a maximum height of 79 meters (259 feet) and a vertical drop of 70 meters (230 feet). The train blasts around a 2,045-meter- (6,709-foot-) long track in three minutes and thirty six seconds at a top speed of 130 kilometers (81 miles) per hour. The roller coaster is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's "tallest traditional complete circuit roller coaster."

•The Millennium Force, Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, United States is 6595 ft. In addition, utilizing the latest in the thrill ride technology, the Millennium Force was the first coaster in the world, which used an elevator lift system to take riders up a forty five degree angle to the top of its impressive construction. Here, at the top, riders plummet to the ground at a breathtaking eighty degree angle.
Among the wooden rides, the longest roller coasters are:

•The Beast, located in the Paramount's Kings Island, Kings Mill, Ohio, the United States, 7400 ft long.

•The Son of Beast, the Paramount's Kings Island, Kings Mill, Ohio, the United States, 7032 ft, built in 2000.

Okidoki (="that's all right") is the longest junior roller coaster in the world, located in Bobbejaanland (the Merriest Land), Belgium. Okidoki is 436 meters long with butterfly cars, which deliver fabulous and thrilling experiences to small kids.
