The University of Illinois is recognized as one of the eminent public institutions of higher learning. Each campus contributes significantly to the overreaching mission of the university. In addition to its campuses, the University of Illinois operates education centers and extension offices across the state. It also offers online education with a number of classes available via the internet.
The University of Illinois at Chicago is the largest university in the area with the total of 15 colleges and 25,000 students. However, it shouldn't be confused with the University of Chicago, which is the second largest in the Chicago area. The University of Illinois at Chicago is also regarded as the largest medical school in the nation, serving as a main educator and provider of the state's pharmacists, nurses, physicians, dentists and other professionals in the field of medicine.
Fifteen colleges within the university offer 74 Bachelor's, 76 Master's and 60 Doctoral degree programs. The planning programs of the university are ranked highest in the nation. Prominent alumni include Carol Moseley Braun, Gerry Chico, Michael Gross, Joseph Hartnett, Leonard Roberts and others.
Established in 1969, the University of Illinois at Springfield became the part of the university system in 1995. It is now considered to be the national leader in education online. The university has the enrollment of 4,500 students, who are offered 20 Bachelor's, 18 Master's and one Doctoral degree programs. There are four colleges within the university: Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business and Management and Public Affairs and Administration. The most celebrated alumnus of the university is the University of Colorado's Professor Ward Churchill.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is considered to be the largest campus of the university system. Established originally as the Illinois Industrial University, the campus changed its name in 1862. At present, it consists of 272 major buildings in the cities of Urbana and Champaign. The student body is comprised of 29,500 undergraduate students and 11,000 graduate students. Among the notable alumni of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign there are eleven Nobel Prize winners and sixteen Pulitzer Prize winners. Many outstanding athletes have graduated from the university, some of them enjoying professional athletic careers. The intra-fraternity system of the university includes 20 sororities and 45 fraternities, which provide a residential network for 29,000 undergraduate students.
The university also boasts the largest public university library, comprised of 22 million volumes of books and periodicals. The academic and research facilities, divided between the cities of Champaign and Urbana contribute to the wellbeing and prosperity of the University of Illinois. The current president of the university is B. Joseph White.
