The foundation of Osaka Prefecture University is a result of reorganization of three universities: Osaka Prefecture University, Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing and Osaka Women's University. Both the Former Osaka Prefecture University and Osaka Women's University were established by the prefecture in 1949. Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing was established in 1994 to foster professionals specializing in medical care and high quality health. In April 2005 these three bodies were integrated into Osaka Prefecture University. The university has acquired a solid reputation due to its constant contributions to the development of higher education and research.
The university's Graduate Schools cover the following aspects: Engineering, Science, Life and Environmental Sciences, Economics, Nursing, Humanities and Social Sciences. Undergraduate school system provides education in the Undergraduate Schools of Engineering, Science, Life and Environmental Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Economics, Comprehensive Rehabilitation, Nursing, Liberal Arts and Sciences. The main university campus is located in Sakai, Osaka.
The university has established the Library and Information Center as a source of academic information. The main function of the library is seen in providing data on books, periodicals and other publications. The communication center offers support information education and practical training. The Library and Information Center is available for students, faculty members and the residents of the prefecture.
The superb faculties of Osaka Prefecture University attract students from many countries worldwide. Foreign students can enjoy a number of services, including housing, financial aid, health care and others. Some departments and graduate schools offer courses for students, who want to finish their previous courses at various times. Various types of scholarships are available for excellent students.
The university has the system of tuition fees remission. Students, who have financial problems, may ask to have their tuition reduced. Foreign students are offered a number of dormitories and international lodges for their housing. The information on room rental is available at the Foreign Student's Section of the Student Affairs Office. The university assigns a tutor (usually a Japanese graduate student) for providing personal guidance to foreign students. The main function of the tutor is to assist foreign students in studies and research. The University Clinic offers health consultations and treatment. Students, who want a piece of advice concerning their health, may consult the Clinic.
In April 2005 the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was launched by the university. It consists of three departments: Human Sciences, Social Welfare and Language and Culture. The goal of the school is to develop human resources, which will further contribute to international societies and local communities. Partly due to the Osaka University Japan can add to its wellbeing and intellectual development.
