This film tells the story of a sixteen year old mermaid Ariel who is dissatisfied greatly with her life under the sea. Paying no attention to the warnings of her father, King Triton, and the court musician, the crab Sebastian, Ariel and her best friend, Flounder the fish frequently reach the surface of the ocean, and with the help of the goofy seagull named Scuttle, they collect human artifacts.
Regardless of her awareness of the forbidden contact between humans and sea people, Ariel strives to become part of the human world. Hiding in her secret cave, Ursula, who has been looking for a chance to take revenge on King Triton for bashing her from the kingdom decides to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
That night when Ariel and Flounder sneak up to the surface of the ocean, they view a fireworks display in celebration of the birthday of Prince Eric. When a storm destroys his ship, Prince Eric almost drowns in the ocean before Ariel saves him and starts to like him.
After King Triton discovers that his daughter has fallen in love with a human, he destroys all of her treasures that are connected with the human world. Unseen by anyone, Ursula brings Ariel to her underwater cave and makes a deal with the fairy princess to transform her into a human for three days in which she must give the kiss of true love to the prince; otherwise she will be turned into a mermaid on the third day. In case Ariel fails to remain a human, she will be turned into a polyp. As payment, the witch takes Ariel's voice making her unable to speak.
While Ariel, as a human lives in the palace with Eric, Ursula makes an attempt to prevent Ariel from kissing Eric. She casts a spell on the prince that makes him plan a marriage ceremony that upsets Ariel.
Therefore, Ursula realizes her plan when Ariel transforms into a mermaid because she grabs her and disappears into the sea. King Triton attempts to destroy the deal between Ursula and his daughter by offering his soul in the place of Ariel's soul. He sacrifices himself for his daughter by allowing himself to be turned into a polyp. After Eric kills Ursula, all of the polyps in her garden turn back into sea people. Seeing how unhappy Ariel is, King Triton decides to help her by turning her into a human. Both sea people and humans arrange the wedding after which Ariel and Eric sail away and live happily ever after.
Seen as one of the most successful Disney movies, the Little Mermaid is also a significant film in the history of animation for many reasons. First and foremost, it marked the return of the musical format which had made Disney productions popular during the period of 1930 to 1960. The film also had the greatest special effects since Fantasia that was produced in 1941. It has been estimated that more than a million bubbles were drawn for the Little Mermaid not to mention the processes of backlighting, airbrushing, and computer animation. In 1989, the film won the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score and both Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song with the former winning the award.
