The rivalry of music download and cds software

In the '70s, Philips researchers began to experiment on "audio-only" optical discs, which would make possible to modulate and digitalize audio signals. The prototypes of digital audio discs were presented by Philips, Sony and other companies at the end of the 70s. In 1979 Philips and Sony started working together on the production of a new digital audio disc. A year later the Compact Disc standard, the "Red book" was produced

The usage of Cds' software became possible due to Philips and Sony, which spent much time on the researches of the digital audio recording and since then, they have constantly developed digital technologies. The Japanese company launched commercially the digital recording of classical and jazz in the early seventies. "Bob Till You Drop" by Ry Cooder became the first digitally recorded popular music album (1978). The digital recording had become a commonplace among artists and producers before the compact disc was introduced to the public and spread worldwide. In 1985, Sony and Philips established the Yellow Book CD-ROM standard, which allowed a computer with a CD-ROM drive to read audio-compact discs.

However, the cds software is not the only medium for recording music today. Recently, the cds software have been supplanted by the music download software, which gives more varieties for music recording, storing, editing, composing and, in general, doing with music anything you want. The result is that today the Cds' software is mainly the standard playback format for commercial audio recording. As far as the music download software is concerned, it allows to govern the process of recording music by yourself, finding your favorite artists and compiling your own albums. There are not so many complete albums in the net, although, there are numerous downloads of new bands, which want to increase their popularity. The absence of complete albums is a drawback if compared with compact discs, which suggest a great number of them. As for the well-known artists, the free or shareware downloading of their recordings is often illegal, as the free music downloading, decreases the sales of the compact discs. There is a strong competition and even opposition between the Cds' software and the music download software. The first does not influence the development and popularity of the second; nevertheless, the music download software interferes greatly with the popularity of the compact discs usage and their sales.

However, the cds software is still in great demand due to several reasons. First, not everybody has the internet at home, but has a computer or a Cd player, and a compact disc is a much better variant to listen to music in comparison with the cassette due to the quality of the sound. Secondly, the cds software, along with the music download software, permits to record the music from the internet and to use it in varied ways, for instance, to share it with your friends, as the recordable Cds are available today. The Cds' software technology is developing fast and today discs of various format, capability and standard are present in the market.
