The new vibe of Chicago?s Crobar club

Added: 12/28/2005

Crobar club in Chicago is a high-energy nightclub featuring top international DJs spinning today's hottest dance music. Crobar, the warehouse transformed to posh party palace, attracts the true party people, a young crowd dancing to techno-pop and house. Crobar is by far one of the best clubs to visit.

Youth, fashion and aggressive partying have returned. A veteran of the Chicago late-night scene, Crobar club has managed to stay hip since 1991. The warehouse-gone-glam look and thumping sound system give the space a quintessential dance club feel, although a recent revamp gave the place a fresh dose of energy and new spots for people-watching - including a booth-lined balcony overlooking the huge dance floor. So the club's latest renovations meld bright South Beach colors (pink and blue lighting) with industrial chic. The long entryway's glazed subway tile complements the upper deck's exposed-stud walls, glass and aluminum railings, and rock-retaining walls. The upper level winds around from the main DJ booth to a large glass-enclosed VIP area. Complete with its own DJ booth, two bars, bathrooms, white tables and gray banquettes, "the Suite" serves special clientele in style. Upper floor also contains the Rock Bar, decorated with stones trapped in the wall. The club's different bars serve up a range of drinks. If you're especially gorgeous - or free-spending -you might make it into the glass-encased VIP room. The soundtrack is mostly hip-hop and house, and the weekend DJs have a strong local following, so you might be fighting for prime dance space.
Sonically, techno rules the mirror-balled main room of Crobar club. Professional dancers on platforms above the floor and front bar energize the party. The music is house, trance, techno-infused with hip hop and old school rock. Emphasis, however, is placed on exuberant house and driving techno. If you like to dance in any way shape or form - this is the place. Crobar's vibe and service are upbeat--and its crowd is fairly mixed racially and age-wise, and mostly attitude-free. The owners say they want the club to attract everyone from hipsters to yuppies, punks to socialites. You don't have to worry about celebrities stealing all of the attention--the swirling crowd on the dance floor is the club's real focal point. The performances of the dancers on platforms were AMAZING and something to be appreciated. Crobar club is just a stage for many eclectic characters to act. From high-rollers sipping decadent martinis to shirtless guys pounding the dance floor, it's energetic, excited and dressed to impress. As for the dress code, though, almost anything goes. Club fashions in their most extreme are on display. Since it's only open on weekends, every night at Crobar club Chicago offers a party. Saturday nights belong to Teri Bristol and her pounding mix of floor-filling techno. The gay crowd represents on "Anthem Sundays". Fridays occasionally feature top-notch talent from around the world.
Be sure to get to the club before 11PM to by-pass the $20 cover or you can call ahead to asked to be put on the guest list for free admission. VIP-room access is worth attempting, but regulars and celebrities get priority (though the space can be reserved for private parties).
With the extreme makeover Crobar club may have shed its messy, youthful exuberance for a more mature look, but it didn't lose any of its intensity in the exchange. Party at Crobar!
