The Celebrity Millennium cruise ship manifests the quiet European elegance and the modern technologies and accommodation standards. She is a beautiful ship with the all-fleet Celebrity exterior: orange life boats, navy blue hull with a gold stripe around the promenade deck and the big letter "X", which is the Greek letter "Chi", the symbol of the original owner of Celebrity Chandris family.
This long-awaited ship was launched in 2000 and became the largest ever built in France. The presentation of the Celebrity Millennium cruise ship was really an event as she started the series of four state-of-the-art ships built by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire for Celebrity. Her sister ships are Infinity (February 2001), Summit (September 2001) and Constellation (May 2002). All these liners oriented towards the experienced passengers who appreciate the fine arts and the highest living standards of the European nobility. That is why their signature feature is the exclusive interior decor, including museum-quality contemporary art collections.
The Celebrity Millennium design is a very special one. Its unique detail is the walnut paneling in Millennium's Olympic specialty dining room which is authentic paneling from the premiere dining room of the RMS Olympic, the sister ship to the famous Titanic. Celebrity Cruise Line purchased it through Sotheby's.
The pieces of art decorating the interior of the Celebrity Millennium cruise ship have been carefully sorted to arouse the passengers' interest. For example, on the Plaza Deck 3 there is a tree painting which seems to be hung upside down but actually pictures the reflection of a tree in the water. There is also a ceramic bust of Christopher Columbus by Luigi Ontani on the same deck. It is very amusing as Columbus wears on his head the models of his three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
In regard to the technical features, this highly advanced ship was built to Panamax standards, allowing it to transit Panama and Suez Canals. But the most innovations concern spectacular features of accommodations which make passengers' stay on board even more comfortable and more fascinating. Over 80 percent of staterooms on the Celebrity Millennium cruise ship have ocean views and 74 percent have verandahs. Also, the physically challenged can choose from several cabin categories and suites. The Penthouse Deck presents the cruise industry's largest Penthouse Suite of 3,000 square feet, including a verandah, personal exercise equipment, butler's pantry and Baby Grand piano. Personal computers with Internet access, flat screen monitors and printers are available in the suites too.
The most extraordinary features of the Celebrity Millennium cruise ship are the first at sea deck to deck glass elevators, presenting great ocean views to the travelers, the music library "Notes" offering the great choice of records for music lovers and the expanded Internet cafe for 18 seats. The name of the ship, "Millennium", embodies not only the date of the maiden voyage that took place in July 2000, but also the New Era criteria and innovations, so much anticipated by the producers and sea lovers alike.
