Blue Bunny Ice Cream, owned by Wells' Dairy, is the largest family owned and operated dairy processor in the United States. The company is located just north of Sioux City. The company started in 1925, when Fred H. Wells and his sons began making and selling ice cream in Le Mars. Soon the ice cream was sold in Remsen and Alton as well. They began distributing the ice cream in Sioux City, but in 1928 Fairmont Ice Cream purchased the plant and the right to use the Wells' name. They held a "Name That Ice Cream" contest where
"Blue Bunny" was the winning name.
The business now employs 2,000 people in a town of 10,000. Its sales have been estimated at $500 million, and its international sales have reached into the millions. Blue Bunny's competitors include international conglomerates such as Nestle and Unilever. Le Mars, where Blue Bunny is made, is known as the Ice Cream Capital of the World. More ice cream is made in Le Mars than any other place on the planet.

There the visitors learn about the history of ice cream, Wells' Dairy and Blue Bunny, experience interactive exhibits and get a glimpse at how America's ice cream is made. Afterwards, the visitors can stroll next door to an authentic, old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness soda fountain and indulge in their favorite Blue Bunny ice cream creation. Blue Bunny sells its ice cream in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
