The most famous castle hotel Dublin is the Clontarf Castle both: a great historical memorial and a cozy "home" for its visitors. The Clontarf Castle hides in the suburbs of Dublin, two miles from the city center and five miles from the Dublin airport. It is situated in a peaceful wooden area and is splendid for a peaceful vacation or only for a day-stay.
The hotel walls, interior and blearing fires inspire the long and charming history of the castle. Clontarf became famous long before the castle's building, during the Battle of Clontarf, on Good Friday, 23rd April, 1014. This battle became the gateway to the history of Clontarf.
In 1172, the Clontarf castle was built as an inner circle of defense sites protecting Dublin. From that time the castle was used primarily for protect and attack purposes. During the Cromwell Republic, particularly on 14 August, 1649, Oliver Cromwell granted the castle to John Blackwell, who then sold it to John Vernon, the Quartermaster General of Cromwell's army in Ireland. The Vernons owned the Clontarf castle Dublin for nearly three hundred years with the motto "Vernons always flourished" (Vernon Semper Viret).
In 1835, the original building lost its safeness and firmness and a prominent Irish architect, William Vetruvius Morrison, was asked to find out the problem and solve it.
Therefore, the Clontarf castle hotel Dublin, as we can see it today, is the reconstruction of the building of the year 1837. Together with the reconstruction year, the Vernon's male line vanished and the castle was passed to George Oulton, through one of the nieces of John Vernon, who sold the castle to Eddie and Gerry Regan in the 1960's. The Regans began the tradition of organizing weddings and cabaret shows in the castle.
In 1972, Gerry and Carmel Houlihan bought the Clontarf castle and it was the best cabaret venue in Dublin until 1997.
In 1998, the Clontarf castle was reopened as the Clontarf castle hotel Dublin. Today, it offers deluxe bedchambers, Templars Bistro, the Knights Bar, The Drawbridge Tavern and banqueting and conference facilities.
Another castle hotel, worth being recommended, is the Fitzpatrick castle hotel Dublin. The hotel is located in a twenty minutes drive from the city center in quite and fashionable suburbs of Killiney and Dalkey. It offers all the comfort and relaxation in one of its hundred and thirteen suite rooms, recently refurbished and equipped with a DD telephone, multi-channel television, tea and coffee making facilities and spectacular views over Killiney and Dublin Bay. It is four star hotel, accepting such credit cards as American Express, MasterCard, Carte Blanche, Diners Club and Visa. The hotel is comfortable enough for businessmen, families with and without children and newly-married couples.
Generally, Dublin is a perfect venue to explore the medieval past of Ireland as well as to enjoy the view of the magnificent ancient architectural creations.
What is the most comfortable for a Dublin visitor today is that any castle hotel Dublin, mentioned here or not, is available for a simple online booking along with a detailed description of its facilities and amenities.
