The Most Celebrated Dance Events

At present, dance events comprise a significant part of cultural life of any country. They are seen now as an integral element of world culture, the embodiment of national character, and the reflection of the spiritual life. Among the festivals recognized as the highest form of art are Jacob's Pillow, the Merrie Monarch Festival, the Canada Dance Festival, and the American Dance Festival.

In 1939, the festival moved to Mills College in Oakland, California, but returned to its original place two years later. In 1949, the festival got its present name, and thirty years later it moved to the campus of Duke University.
 
Throughout its history, the festival maintained the reputation of a leading cultural event in the nation, attracting a number of modern choreographers and companies such as Pearl Lang, Ruth Currier, Paul Taylor, Jose Limon, Alwin Nikolais, Erick Hawkins, and Twyla Tharp. In addition to the dance performances, the American Dance Festival also comprises the school for modern dance. The visitors of the festival have unique opportunity to watch the world dance premieres.
 
The Merrie Monarch Festival, held annually in Hawaii, is one of the eminent dance events in the United States. It honors the patron of arts, King David Kalakaua, who has contributed greatly to the restoration of the Hawaiian cultural traditions.
 
Recognized as the most prestigious in the nation, the dance contests of the festival attract a number of hula schools from the USA and Japan. Starting on Easter Sunday, the Marrie Monarch Festival features cultural demonstration and entertainment for the whole week of its duration. The culmination of the event is the annual dance competition, held on Friday and Saturday.
 
Dance events are abundant in Canada, with the Canadian Dance Festival ranking highest in the nation. Founded in 1944, the festival is a biannual event held in the county's capital of Ottawa. It brings together leading dance choreographers, performers, and dance companies.
 
The events of the festivals take place in the National Arts Center and the National Gallery of Canada.
 
The festival was initiated in 1987 by the Dance in Canada Association, Ottawa Summer Festival, and the National Arts Center. Today, as ever, the festival sees its mission in promoting professional dance achievements of Canada, and demonstrating originality and quality of the work that is produced nationwide.
 
Despite of the difficulties met by the festival in 2002, its organizers will work toward presenting diverse dance events in 2006 through improvement of the quality of their work, and the involvement of a larger number of professionals in the dance-related industry.
 
Today, as ever, the festival aims at maintaining the leading position in the dance community by supporting such initiatives as professional development, youth education, and audience development.
 
Hip hop events are associated with Kemp, an international hip hop festival held every August in the Czech Republic. The festival is seen today as the largest dance event in Europe, attracting 20,000 spectators annually.
