The main objective of the European Universities Association is to promote and reinforce the development of higher education and academic research. This aim can be achieved through providing constant support to enable its members to improve the quality of their teaching and research. The focus of the European Universities Association is to strengthen the role of universities in European research and higher education. It also seeks to implement joint projects with the universities of Europe on a number of vital issues, and to promote an inflow of information through organizing various conferences and meetings. The four main bodies that control the European Universities Association include: the Presidency, the Board, the Council and the General Assembly. The body of the Presidency consists of the President, who is elected every four years and two Vice-Presidents, who perform the functions of the President in his absence. Professor Roderick Floud and the Rector of Karlstad University Professor Christina Ullenius are the current Vice-Presidents of the Association. The Board includes the President, Vice-Presidents, and former, or present, University rectors. It bears the responsibility for preparing and implementing the Association's activities. The Council consists of the President, Board members and the representatives from all members of the Association. It meets twice a year to develop guidelines on urgent issues and service to the members of the Association. The governing body of the European Universities Association is the General Assembly, which consists of all members of the Association. It is empowered to elect the President and the Board, and to determine the strategic direction of the Association. In 2004, offices existed in Brussels and Geneva. Currently there is only one office left, the one in Brussels.
European Universities Association is a single organization, which represents the European university community. Its joint collaboration with numerous European colleges and universities resulted in the establishment of various organizations, like the Magna Charta Observatory of Fundamental University Values and Rights - a non-profit organization, founded by the EUA and the University of Bologna. Magna Charta Observatory determines its main objective in protecting the rights and values of the universities, which were established in the Magna Charta Universitatum. European Universities Association is open to universities, conferences as well as networks and associations of institutions of higher education across Europe. The members of the organization benefit from a great number of activities and services. These are aimed at sustaining their development and providing them with the possibility of contributing to the discussion of major European education-related issues through various seminars and conferences.
