The Economic History Association -- Promoting Teaching and Research in the Field of Economic History

Added: 05/27/2006

One of the leading organizations dedicated to the study of economic phenomena in the past, the Economic History Association was created in 1940 with the aim of encouraging and promoting teaching, publication, and research on all phases of economic history and preserving materials for research in economic history. The current membership of the organization is composed of over 1,000 individual members worldwide.

For more than six decades the Economic History Association has been adhering to its founding principles and pursuing its goals, namely to promote publication, research and teaching of each phase of economic history. Published by the Association is the Journal of Economic History, regarded as the leading North American journal in this field. It has been published by Cambridge University Press since 1940 and is of particular interest to social and demographic historians, economic historians and economists.

Among the topics examined are trade, technology, manufacturing, money and banking, transportation, agriculture, labor, industrial organization, demography, servitude, economic growth and education. In addition, there is an extensive review section keeping readers informed on the latest publications in the field of economic history.

The Economic History Association supports research in the field of economic history through the following grant programs: Annual Meetings Travel and Hotel Subsidies, Exploratory Travel and Data Grants, Graduate Dissertation Fellowships and Arthur H. Cole Grants in Aid. In addition, EHA awards prizes for publications, including the Alice Hanson Jones award for the best book published in American economic history and the Arthur Cole Award for the best article published in the Journal of Economic History, and more.

Among the programs offered by the Economic History Association are Graduate Dissertation Fellowships, designed for students who have made progress towards writing a dissertation; and Exploratory Travel and Data Grants intended for doctoral students who consider writing a dissertation in economic history. Such programs provide funding for specific research purposes. Graduate students may also apply to become participants of the poster sessions at the Annual Meetings and get the following support once accepted: travel subsidies up to $800 for international flights and up to $500 for domestic flights, complimentary hotel room for up to three nights, 80% discount on the Saturday Presidential Banquet and 60% discount on the registration fee.

The membership dues of the Economic History Association are $20 for students and professors, $35 for those with annual income below $50,000, and $60 for those with annual income exceeding $50,000. The 66th Annual Meeting of EHA: Frontiers and Institutional Innovation - Property Rights, Production Organization and Governance and Political Structure, is scheduled for September 2006. It is expected to be visited by about 200 participants from all over the world.

Like the Economic History Association, the Economic History Society was established to support teaching and research in social history and economics. This is achieved through a number of publications, such as the Economic History Review, as well as a range of study packs and textbooks, through workshops and conferences, through prizes to young scholars and through finance of research fellowships.

Along with such societies as the Agricultural History Society, the Social History Society and the Urban History Group, the Economic History Society works to influence government policy in interests of history.
