The first programming day on the Disney Channel started with an episode of Good Morning Mickey which had classic Disney Cartoons. In addition, to Good Morning Mickey, early programming on the channel included Donald Duck Presents, You and Me Kid, Welcome to Pooh Corner, and Dumbo's Circus. At first, the Disney Channel had an 18 hour programming day which ran from 7am to 1am. It was not until 1986 that the Channel began it 24 hour programming schedule.
Strange as it may seem the majority of the Disney Channel's programming doesn't have classical Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto any more. They appear mostly at holiday time in shows like Mickey's Once upon a Christmas, and House of Mouse. These changes were bought about by the network once it split into three different programming blocks that included Playhouse Disney that was aimed at preschool children; Vault Disney that had such classic Disney films and shows such as: the Mickey Mouse Club, Zorro, and the Love Bug. And, the Disney Channel had the most extensive block of shows such as: Smart Guy, The Famous Jet Jackson, So Weird, and much more.
During the early 2000s, the audience had the chance to view a series of specials called, In Concert. Since 2005, the Disney Channel doesn't air original specials anymore. The year 2000 witnessed some major changes to the channel. Therefore, it moved from premium cable to basic cable with the following modifications to its design elements. The Channel's logos that were introduced in 1997 and featured a pair of Mickey Mouse ears was changed to a Zoog Disney imagine.
With the emergence of such shows as Kim Possible, Even Stevens, and some other shows during the period from 2001 to 2003, the Disney Channel received higher ratings. The network's banner show as well as its highest rated program was Lizzie McGuire.
Today, the highest rated show on the Disney Channel is the 100 episode show called that's So Raven that has run since 2004. Other hit shows include: Phil of the Future, Kim Possible, the Suite Life of Zack and Cody as well as such popular shows as Boy Meets World. In addition, Disney Channel movies are broadcast every night and new movies are aired on the channel about six times a year. In 2000, the Disney Channel planned to produce a new film each month, but that only lasted one year. Now the Disney Channel airs 14 movies a week for about one hour.
Because of the Playhouse Disney block, preschool programming is still a part of the channel's morning schedule. Until recently, programs that were unrelated to Disney dominated the schedule. However, with the explosion of original series on the Disney Channel, the only non original programming as of February, 2006 is Sister Sister Boy meets World, and Disney's House of Mouse. The channel has also refused to show some episodes of the non original show Boy Meets World because of its not suitable content for children. Its second series will be syndicated in September, 2006 with the Even Stevens premiere.
Today, the Disney Channel is available in most of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America.
