The Bottom - the Largest Settlement in Saba's Capital is full of Fun Attractions!

Added: 04/25/2006

Located some 195 miles east of San Juan, Puerto Rico and 1,225 miles southeast of Miami, Saba is the smallest island in the Netherlands Antilles that boasts neat and quiet villages making it wonderful destination for peaceful relaxation rather than for bustling nightlife. Recognized as the largest settlement on Saba, the Bottom is home to a number of government offices, a nursing home and Saba University School of Medicine among other attractions.

As soon as you arrive at the Bottom, the largest town of Saba, Netherlands Antilles, the first things you are sure to encounter are two buildings comprising the Saba University School of Medicine, whose students come mainly from North America. To the east is the department of public works housed in an old school building and Saba's oldest Anglican church, whose origins date back to the 1700s.

The center of the main square is home to the bust of the policeman Samuel Charles, gunned here in 1989 in a drugs-related incident. Around the square you'll see neat buildings with white picket fences and police stations, while the eastern edge of the Bottom is home to the governor's house, featuring splendid galleries and intricate wooden fretwork. Some of the most widely reputed sights and attractions of the town include the Wesleyan Holiness Church, with its original walls dating back to 1919.

Visitors to the Bottom are offered some of the best Saba hotels, including Queen's Gardens Resort, Cranston's Antique Inn and Juliana's Hotel among others.
Nestled in the Windward Islands, just ten minutes from Sint Eustatius and Sint Maaren, the Queen's Gardens Resort is possibly the most luxurious hotel in the Bottom, overlooking the Caribbean Sea and one of the picturesque villages of the area. All of its twelve exclusive suites are appointed with unique Dutch and British colonial furniture from the West and East Indies and offer breathtaking views.

Each bedroom features a king size bed, a comfortable sitting area with large sofas, leather chairs and colonial dining table. Other in-room amenities include cable TV, fully-equipped kitchen and everything you would expect from this small luxury resort. Guests can also enjoy a wide range of hotel facilities, including an outdoor bar, a gourmet restaurant "The Mango Royale", the largest pool on the island and a spacious conference room, ideal for weddings, banquets, conferences and meetings.

Among services available are hiking and diving arrangements, room service at request and full concierge service.

Whenever you look for the atmosphere and inexpensive rates during your stay in the Bottom, consider Cranston's Antique Inn, a modest 19th  century Guest House situated within walking distance of Ladder Bay. The hotel's owner, Mr. Cranston will be happy to provide you with the same apartments where Queen Juliana spent her holiday in 1955 or some other important events took place. In addition to the antique wooden beds, the tiny bedrooms feature private shower-only bathrooms and nice furnishings. Some of the hotel facilities include restaurant, bar and outdoor pool.

One of the most affordable options, Juliana's Hotel provides its guests with simply but comfortably furnished guest rooms, all of them having access to balconies and sun decks that offer spectacular views of the Caribbean. Also available is a renovated Saba cottage with a spacious living room, two bedrooms, a dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen and a TV.

Visitors can take advantage of the following hotel facilities: outdoor pool, restaurant, bar and recreation room.
