Added: 01/30/2006

White wines are appreciated everywhere, and it is not just a fashion trend. White, pure and clean, like a tear drop, white wine has a number of fans and collectors all around the world. If you want your collection to be a subject of envy of other collectors - it is enough to have a hundred-year old pure French Chardonnay with a centimeter- thick layer of precious dust of the time.

White wines were created for those who feel the style with every tiny little part of their body, with the eyes, with the tongue and nose and with the heart and soul. White wine types radiate incomparable elegance, the pale colour of the substance and graceful aroma indicate that that is a really noble beverage. The most popular dry white wines along with sweet white wines, that are appreciated by the experts all around the world are:
• Chardonnay
• Gewurztraminer
• Pinot Blanc
• Sauvignon Blanc
• Viognier
The grapes that are harvested to make these wines are grown in different parts of the world, on different continents but with absolute love and care. That is why these white wine types are especially loved and respected. The most famous white wine countries are The United States of America and France.
In France Chardonnay grape is grown in Burgundy. Actually, Burgundy grapes are used to produce a vast number of different white wines. Apart from Chardonnay, the following names can be familiar to you, even if you are not a wine expert: Chablis, Mâcon-Villages, Pouilly-Fuisse and Meursault. Each of these white wine types have their absolutely special taste and flavour which distinguishes it from all the other white wine types. On the basis of Burgundy grape Champagne is also made.
The United States of America keep the secret of creation of the best Chardonnay in California. The wines produced here are complex, with intensive and lively taste and traces of melon spirit. This wine holds in the depth of its taste rich spice, seductive flavour of smoke, cream and hazelnut. The finish is long and persistent, with tiny nuance of oak. One of the best Chardonnay years was 1994, that is why the wines of this year are so ripe and thick, with the flavour which can only be compared to a spring flower blossom - so bright and vivid, with such a delicious aroma and so long-lasting finish. The American Chardonnay is very often called the Burgundian-like, but it has its own, special traces of taste and flavour which grants the wine its status and respect of Chardonnay-lovers.
Gewurztraminer is the wine of Alsace, the French province of top-quality wines. They are individual-scented, with the only-to-them peculiar accents. Here, in Loire Valley, Mascadet and other light wines are produced along with sweet white wines like Barsac, Sauternes, and Premiëres Cmtes de Bordeaux.
In the United States, grapes that are used to produce Gewurztraminer are grown in Washington, D.C., in the most famous private vineyard Mont Elise. The winery located here operates since 1975.
Pinot Blanc is another wine that won fame to the Alsace region in France. This light dry wine tastes smooth and round, richly flavoured and spicy. Here, in Alsace, another famous Pinot is produced - Pinot Gris, the honey-scented wine.
Sauvignon Blanc is the gem of the Loire Valley, produced here along with Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, plus Bordeaux Blanc, Graves and Entre-deux-Mers.
Viognier is the unique grape, grown exclusively in the north of the Rhûne area of Chateau-Grillet and Condrieu. The wines produced here possess the great, incomparable honeysuckle aroma.
