The third largest of all the Greek islands, Lesbos demands much time for a full and proper appreciation. Lesbos was the birthplace of Sappho, an ancient Greek poetess and Aesop who wrote the famed book of fables.
The distinctive rocky, volcanic landscape with its plentiful oak and pine forests is dotted with thermal springs, great examples of Byzantine architecture and stunning beaches. Traditional villages abound on Lesbos, and can be visited by any tourist or traveler wanting to experience a more genuinely Greek way of life than that offered by the major tourist destinations.
Resorts are scattered all around the island coast. While little on Lesbos stands out, this eclectic island has hidden treasures. There are wonderful beaches, fascinating villages and interesting towns even if you can find yourself crossing dreary countryside in order to savor them.
The huge variety of flora and fauna are a magnet for botanists and for bird watchers, especially in the spring. Others come to dip themselves in one of the many healing hot water springs while many more head for some of the best fish taverns in Greece, the strongest ouzo in the Mediterranean and the finest olive oil anywhere except Crete.
Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, is located on the eastern side of the island and overlooks the harbor below. A Genoese castle, the Kastro of Mytilene, was built on the site of an earlier Byzantine fortification and is one of the major attractions of Mytiline. Troubled throughout much of its history by occupation or plundering by Venice, Genoa, the Franks, the Turks, and the Catalans, Lesbos ultimately re-united with Greece in 1912. Big and beautiful Lesbos has arms stretched wide to embrace the package tourist market.
Lesbos restaurants as well as Lesbos bars and clubs abound on the island. You can't boast of experiencing all that Leabos has to offer without visiting Lesbos restaurants. With varied menu, great for breakfast and offering alternative atmosphere, Lesbos restaurants are the best sites for sampling local specialties.
A popular Taverna Stratos serves the freshest fish and homely local food in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Horizontas, down near Olive Press, always serve good food, even if you have communication problems. It's a nice traditional family run tavern, with very Greek dishes.
Galley in the Harbor is good; best Moussaka to taste, also great Spanakopita and Desserts, good mixed high quality menu. The Octopus is one of the best Lesbos restaurants. Located in Molivos, it offers amazing sea views, big variety in menu, excellent service, fresh fishes, fantastic tastes, and friendly atmosphere. When you visit Molivos, you have to go Octopus.
Sansibal is not very traditional, but one of the most popular Lesbos restaurants with regular visitors in May and September.Albatross in the capital do the classy Greek food, good-sized portions and value, if you don't mind being surrounded by kitsch posing as decor, make up for this bizarre eatery.
With a variety of sightseeing options and some great venues, Lesbos is a travel destination just for you!
