The American Agricultural Economics Association is a society of scientists who use economic tools to solve problems and analyze issues in the area of natural resources, food, agriculture and rural communities. Founded in 1910, it provides networking opportunities and career enhancement, as well as recognition of achievement for its 2,700 members all over the world.
The Association is also a forum for information exchange that offers diverse education opportunities for extension of education beyond degree programs, broadening range of competencies and assisting in skills development. Its mission is to enhance knowledge, skills and professional contributions of economists dedicated to resolving problems related to economic development.
Over the years the American Agricultural Economics Association expressed commitment to pursuing a range of objectives: to nurture and stimulate professional development of its members and potential members; to provide information on issues related to natural resources, agriculture, environment, food system and related issues; to provide a focal point for debate on major critical issues; to enlarge the community of its membership; to expand the AAEA involvement with public service, international community and industry; to broaden participation in a wide range of AAEA activities by groups and individuals with limited resources.
Through such publications as the Review of Agricultural Economics, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics and the online magazine Choices, the American Agricultural Economics Association presents a forum from display and presentation of professional achievement, like peer scrutiny and peer review.
Established in 1985 as a funding organization for the survey, which tracks advancement of minority professionals, the American Agricultural Economics Association Foundation sees its task in funding professional development opportunities and innovative programs for economists practicing in the areas of environment, agriculture, food and resources. Since its establishment, it has provided money for research and other activities not available through other sources. Supported by the Foundation is also minority students' participation in the Professional Ag Workers Congress. It played a key role in the organization of the graduate student members of AAEA to create professional development activities for the graduate level of experience.
Encouraged by the Foundation are international activities for agricultural economists, a student exchange between Australia and the United States and shipment and donation of back issues in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics to libraries of developing countries.
The American Agriculture Economics Association Foundation appreciates contributions from organizations and individuals committed to promoting innovative programs and development opportunities for economists practicing in the areas of environment, resources, agriculture and food.
