Temecula Valley and its rewarded wineries

Added: 03/23/2006

Lying sixty miles north of San Diego, the Temecula Valley is known for its wineries and excellent wines they produce. "Where the sun shines through the mist" translates Temecula from the Native American Language, one name for the town and the valley. Although Temecula is not known worldwide as Napa and Sonoma, as these regions are one hundred years older than Temecula, it has wonderful opportunities for recreation and indulgence as well as an extensive list of premium wines.

Although not famous as Napa and Sonoma, the Temecula Valley is home to numerous vineyards and wineries, capable of bringing some amazement from tasting the finest wines to the most discernable wine lovers. Eighteen wineries produce award-winning, premium wines with over twenty eight varietals from more than two thousand acres of vineyards. Separately organized trips can be taken to discover each winery and enjoy winery tastings. Each vineyard and winemaking facility in the Temecula Valley is a result of hard labor and enormous enthusiasm, and it is worth visiting to feel its unique character and rewarded wine heritage. Here are only some wineries that can be parts of your wine tour in the Temecula Valley.

Callaway Vineyard and Winery is the region's leading producer of some of America's favorite wines. It is located right in the center of the Temecula Valley and produces a generous variety of premium wines. Callaway wines are known as well-balanced with a fresh fruit aroma and a crisp character, which makes them a wonderful complement to refined meals.

Bella Vista Cilurzo Vineyard & Winery is a proud owner of two 2000 gold medals for its 1998 Petite Sirah Reserve and the 2000 Viognier at the California State Fair Wine Competition and 2001 gold medal for the 2000 Late Harvest Petite Sirah, won at the Jerry Mead International Wine Competition. Many other wines have been also awarded gold. The winery daily welcomes visitors, who enjoy vintages of the premium wine list in the tasting room and enjoy keepsakes, offered at the Gift Shop. There is also a wonderful picnic area on a small lake at the top of the hill with a panoramic view, overlooking the Temecula Valley Wine Country and the surrounding mountains. The best news for wine lovers is that recently Bella Vista Cilurzo Winery has updated their website and the customers can now make online orders as well as read about the winery's history and descriptions of their wines.

Another featured owner of gold awards at all major competitions in the California State is Baily Vineyard and Winery, established in 1986 by Phil and Carol Baily. Their original aim was to produce a small quantity of wines to be sold directly from the winery, but in the course of time, this small winery has turned into great wine vicinity, accomplished with the Baily Wine Country Cafe and Carol's restaurant as to let numerous visitors enjoy both food and wine. Above all, Baily's 8000 square feet state-of-the-art winemaking facility includes fifty thousand gallons of wine tanks, several hundred barrels, case goods and a bottling line. The facility is open for excursions and visitors can see all the process of winemaking from grape to bottling.

Alex's Red Barn Winery is a charming family-owned facility, currently producing about one thousand and two hundred cases annually. The grapes' varietals include Syrah, Viognier and Muscat Canelli, famous old Johannisberg Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. They also have a special equipment to produce Sherry wines in the historical Spanish sherry tradition. A nice picnic area and special events complement to a wonderful experience of wine tasting at Alex's Red Barn Winery.
