Since its establishment in 1951, the Pacific Asia Travel Association has strived to establish itself as the leading authority on tourism and travel to Asia and the Pacific region, dedicated to promoting the distinguished features of this outstanding region by bringing together a number of organizations involved in tourism and travel industry. Today as ever, the PATA foundation mission is to contribute to the development and growth of tourism and travel sector in Asia and the Pacific through the heritage conservation, environmental protection and education support. Since 1985 over 40 countries in the Pacific and Asia have experienced the welcoming spirit of the PATA Foundation, becoming the Association's members.
Throughout its history, the Pacific Asia Travel Association has been a leading body dedicated to environmental and cultural heritage preservation in its relation to tourism and travel development. Thus, PATA emphasizes the importance of education, cultural heritage and environment on the long term viability of destinations in the Asia Pacific region. The PATA Foundation is recognized as an extension of the Association's dedication to the conservation principles that are part of PATA charter. The concept of a charitable foundation was proposed at the PATA Annual Conference in 1984 and received unanimous member approval.
The high profile of a Foundation grant is evidence that its real value is much higher than its dollar value.
The PATA Foundation was established to develop effective working relations with grantees and stakeholders and pursue new sources of funding, with its extensive list of successful projects ensuring it's able to produce striking results. The Foundation has succeeded in pursuing its objectives, namely: to promote the development of tourism in the Pacific Asia and contribute to conservation of the cultural heritage and environment of the region; to assist people in Asia Pacific countries in acquiring tools necessary for cultural heritage and environment protection; to provide PATA and the tourism and travel industry with a stronger voice in the international issues on cultural heritage and environmental conservation; to support educational initiatives targeting tourism and travel stakeholders, including industry employees, residents of destination communities and visitors.
Among projects receiving PATA Foundation grants are those working towards protecting the natural environment, conserving cultural heritage including historic buildings and heritage sites, educating people on the significance of environmental and cultural heritage. A project striving to get Foundation's support should also have the support of its local PATA chapter and PATA divisional office, as well as financial support from the local PATA chapter or any other source.
The PATA Foundation receives donations from organizations and individuals worldwide that are involved directly or indirectly in the tourism and travel industry.
Each of its donors shares the Association's concerns about the sustainability of cultural heritage, environment and education in Asia Pacific.
