In 2003 the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development of Korea has recognized the Korea University among 121 domestic universities as an outstanding institution in terms of globalization. The university was considered to be the only one in the nation making achievement in internationalization. This is the result of the university's determination to reach the goal of becoming widely reputed worldwide.

Seoul National University was established on August 22, 1946 as a result of amalgamation of ten schools: Gyeongseong University, Law College, Industrial College, Mining College, Medical College, Agricultural College, Business College, Dentistry College, Education College and Women Education College. The university's three functions are defined as education, research and service to society.
