Florida State Universities comprise the State University System of Florida, which is governed indirectly by the State of Florida. Due to the growing size of the university system, the governing Florida Board of Control was replaced with the Florida Board of Regents in 1965. The amendment to the state constitution in 2002 established a new governing body, the Florida Board of Governors.

All Florida universities fall into one of three broad categories: private and independent institutions, public community colleges, and the state university system. The criteria differentiating them is determined by the source of funding. The universities of each category have multiple campus locations, diverse structures and offer a number of degree programs to their students.
