According to Shanghai Jiao Tong University which establishes the academic ranking of world universities, some of the best European universities occupy a prominent position in the list of the world's top institutions of learning. This is primarily due to a significant improvement in their structure and quality of education. As of 2005, out of 100 of the world's best universities 35 are European. A notable increase over previous years.

Regarded as the prime European organization for higher education, the European Universities Association sees its mission in finding balance between European higher education and research. Established in 2001, through the amalgamation of the Association of European Universities and the Confederation of European Union Rectors, the European Universities Association is now comprised of 760 members from 45 European countries.
