Special City Seoul

Added: 02/24/2006

Seoul is now designated a Special City and not surprisingly. The most populated, cleanest and beautiful megacity of the world, being the world business centre attracts tremendous flows of tourists annually. The Seoul metropolitan area and commuter belt are so densely populated that allows it to become one of the most "digitally-connected" cities. And heavy traffic jams graduated into a constant feature of any Seoul roads. But you just do not notice it, charmed by unique beauty of the seven -centuries old Seoul.

Seoul took its birth from the Gyeongbokgung palace - residence of Korean kings since the 11th century.  As any of  such zones all over the world, Seoul was entirely surrounded by a massive circular wall (a 20-foot-high circular stone fortress) to protect people from the enemies but much more from tigers, who just crowded at the city`s walls. Nowadays , this is Seoul downtown area, where most palaces, government offices, corporate headquarters, hotels and traditional markets are located. During the Joseon dynasty, the gates were opened and closed each day, accompanied by the ringing of large bells. Nowadays Seoul national museum is situated right in the palace, creating historical heart of Korea surrounded by a pond with lotuses.  A legend says that these flowers appeared when an emperor`s sweetheart cried near the pond- so pure and  clean her tears  were. We do not know if it is true, but the only fact is obvious - nowadays the Seoul government achieved in transforming the previously murky atmosphere into a cleaner one having coped with heavy air and water pollution. This area occupies the valley of Cheonggyecheon, a stream that runs from west to east through the valley before emptying into the Han River. For many years the stream had been covered by concrete but it has recently restored. To the north of downtown is Bukhan Mountain, and to the south is the smaller Namsan - a garden on the granite hill dug through for the subway trains  to pass easily.
When you admire Seoul from the highest Seoul tower which gives a wonderful view of the whole city glimmering with flashes, a feeling of  fragility  and at the same time eternity of the BEING cannot abandon you. Just imagine- Seoul is about five thousand years, and though it is a serious but  not the only motive to be proud of. Seoul, the capital of South Korea (the Republic of Korea) since 1948, is one of the most populous cities in the world.
Seoul is divided into South and North parts,  the newer and wealthier areas of Gangnam-gu and surrounding neighbourhoods situating across the Han river with  the sprawling Gangnam area are Namhan Mountain and Gwanak Mountain in the South Seoul.  The business centre is located in Gangnam-gu - The World Trade Center of Korea and Coex mall, a famous indoor mall area,
