Added: 01/14/2006

Ski resorts in Germany provide plentiful facilities for winter recreational activities. In fact, Germany is seen today as one of the most popular destinations in Europe and the world for tourists who want to experience the adventure of skiing and snowboarding. Currently Germany boasts a great number of ski resorts, many of them comparable with the top European resorts.

When you talk about ski resorts in Germany, the most famous has to be the world-renowned Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which belongs to one of the country's largest resorts. Regarded as a Winter Sport Capital, the town is a former host of the Winter Olympics. Skiers are offered more than 28 slopes, stretching across 55 km through four main skiing areas: Osterfelder, Hausberg, Zugspitze and Kreuzeck.

The main rival of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Obersdorf, claiming to be the country's top ski resort. Recognized as one of the best ski resorts in Germany, Obersdorf offers a variety of attractions beyond alpine skiing. It is known as a Kur resort in summer with the number of hotels specializing in health facilities. The skiing can be experienced in three areas with the Fellhorn being the main one. Located 8 km from the town, Fellhorn is considered to be one of the most challenging ski areas in the country, providing enjoyable runs.

There are a great number of restaurants and mountain bungalows available throughout the area. The Nebelhorn ski area is located near ice stadium in the center of Obersdorf. The easiest way to reach it is using regular ski bus. The frequent visitors of the resort consider the Nebelhorn an interesting alternative to the larger Fellhorn ski area.

Obersdorf is easily accessible from Innsbruck, Friedrichshafen and Munich airport. The latter boasts the best motorway connections. The luxurious hotels of Obersdorf reflect its leading position among the top ski resorts in Germany. The number of accommodations is varied to suit every taste and budget. Both Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Obersdorf have a reputation of one the best ski resorts in Germany and are well-known for their world-famous jumping competitions.

With a ski resort northwest of the Berchtesgaden National Park, the Berchtesgaden area is a unique combination of beautiful scenery and prominent sites of historic and cultural heritage. It is seen as a favorite tourist destination all-the-year-round, famous for its natural beauty in winter and summer. The largest and best known is the Jenner ski area, located near the Konigssee Lake.

There is a beginner lift within the area, though the majority of visitors take a two-stage cable car, providing access to the higher mountain runs. Berchtesgaden is easily accessible from Salzburg airport, located 20 km away from the town. Visitors are offered accommodations in the main part of the town. Despite the fact that Berchtesgaden is less famous than other ski resorts in Germany, it is still regarded as a popular destination for a great number of tourists, who have found here a perfect balance between ski adventure and sightseeing.

Lenggries is best known for its ski club, which has produced a number of stars on the World Cup ski-racing circus, including Hilde Gerg, Annemarie Gerg and Martina Ertl. The favorable position of the city has resulted in the development of tourism, important to the local economy. With the extensive ski trails in winter and a variety of hiking and climbing options in summer, Lenggries enjoys popularity all-the-year-round as one of the best ski resorts in Germany.
