Ski getaways in Pennsylvania

Added: 02/27/2006

Each winter, Pennsylvania ski getaways become places to be for fun filled days on the snow. Imagine making carved turns on groomed surfaces under the beautiful mountains sky. Take advantage of all Pennsylvania ski areas and dozens of slopes for all abilities from gentle beginner slopes to expert mogul runs and snowboarding in awesome half pipes. Whether you are into downhill skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing, you will feel the exhilaration of the Pennsylvania ski getaways.

If you're looking for fantastic downhill and cross-country skiing, Pennsylvania is the perfect winter wonderland with a great number of ski getaways! Choose one for yourself and enjoy winter vacation!

Ski Liberty, one of the most popular ski getaways, offers terrain for all ability levels, from new skiers and riders to experts. The trails are serviced by three quad chairlifts, three double chairlifts and two surface lifts. Liberty offers good terrain variety and skiing on two faces of the mountain. The First Class Area, Nova, Sneaky Pete and Don't Worry are designated Family Ski Zones reserved for skiers and riders who prefer a leisurely pace. For riders, Liberty's Adventure Alley terrain park has a variety of terrain features plus a half pipe. Adventure Alley features a sound system and it's own surface lift. You'll find the region's only slopeside hotel and tavern at Ski Liberty. Stay just a few steps from the slopes in one of the 40 guest rooms. The tavern and outdoor deck serve a wide variety of food from a sit down dinner to munchies. On the backside, the South Pole offers snacks and drinks just steps from the quad chairs.

Whitetail ski resort is marketed as America's first major ski area to open in a decade (presumably meaning since Beaver Creek, Colorado). Located just 90 minutes drive from Washington DC and Baltimore, it is situated seven miles off Interstate 70 near to the town of Mercersburg.

Floodlit for night skiing up to 10 pm, the area's 17 runs appeal largely to intermediate level skiers in contrast to many other ski getaways. Experts have a few steep runs over the 900 foot vertical to enjoy, and the whole area is covered by state of the art snow making. The resort's five chairs include a very impressive four modern quads, which combined with the rope tow give a very healthy uplift capacity for a ski area of this size, of over 11,000 skiers per hour.

Ski Roundtop is owned and managed by the same company who also owns Ski Liberty and Whitetail. With the addition of a new snowmaking compressor and new tower-mounted snowguns on the Gunbarrel slope, Ski Roundtop is now able to cover their skiing terrain with fresh snow, faster than other ski getaways. The north-facing slopes keep the snow in top condition. All slopes are lighted for night skiing and are groomed regularly with state of the art flex tillers. Ski Roundtop consistently offers the best snow conditions around and offers a Great Ski Guarantee. If you're unsatisfied for any reason, simply return your lift ticket within one hour of purchase and you will receive a free voucher to come back another time.

But among all ski getaways in Pennsylvania, Poconos ski getaways are most far-famed. The Pocono Mountains central location and interstate access combine to make it a great destination that is easy to reach and easy to tour. During every season, the Poconos offer groups a variety of attractions, places to stay, restaurants, shopping and fun things to do in the Poconos. Whether you are looking for a day tour, overnight stopover, or a destination for three, four, five night's or more, the Pocono Mountains are the ideal location. Pennsylvania's Camelback, located in the heart of the Poconos, has 33 trails of delightful terrain designed primarily for beginners and intermediates. One hundred percent of the resort's terrain is covered by snowmaking, and lights for night skiing.

Located in the Poconos, Shawnee Mountain is the closest major Pennsylvania ski area to metropolitan New York and New Jersey. Half the terrain at Shawnee Mountain is rated 'easiest' and is made up of wide easy cruisers cut through the thick forests. However, there are good steeps on the North face with some challenging moguls. Almost all of the terrain is covered by snowmaking, but the resort receives an average six feet of the natural stuff anyway.

So, Pennsylvania ski getaways have something for everyone irrespective of someone's age and level!
