Six Flags is a chain of amusement parks headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and New York City. The first Six Flags amusement park was built halfway between the cities of Fort Worth and Dallas at Arlington in Tarrant County, Texas, the United States, in 1961. The park took its name from the six flags that have flown over the state of Texas during its history (Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States and the Confederate States of America). The chain grew with the acquisition of other parks, such as Great Adventure Theme Park in Jackson, New Jersey. Great Adventure remained a minor attraction until 1977, when it was purchased by Six Flags and gradually expanded more. In 2000, Hurricane Harbor water park opened as a nearby separate admission park.
The Golden Kingdom, a jungle-themed section, has been built for the 2005 season. Don't fear for your kids though, because the Golden Kingdom has Balin's Jungleland, a huge playground, as well as Kiddie rides and the Tiger Show. The biggest addition to the Golden Kingdom is Kingda Ka, the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster. The newest at Six Flags Great Adventure is El Toro, the second tallest and fastest wooden coaster in the USA, opened for the 2006 season. El Plaza del Carnival, a Spanish-themed section, has come with El Toro. El Plaza, with a mexican restaurant and a few new family rides, is a great addition to the park. Also a new Kid's section has been opened up for the 2006 season called Bugs Bunny National Park. It is a fantastic area with rides and its own theatre for younger children.
Six Flags Tickets are available at the front gate. During the 2006 season, Three-Park admission for guests 54" and taller costs $99.99. It includes admission to Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor and Wild Safari. Three-Park Junior admission available for guests under 54" is $48.99. Children three and under are free.
Great Adventure is huge, plan accordingly. Head for Kingda Ka first, there is usually no line in the morning. You are proposed to get their early, at 10 a.m., when the park opens. Then you can get on all the rides and have time for the safari as well. Do all of the major rides first, and stick to the rides in that area. Don't be running all over the park to get the shortest lines - just go on all the rides in one area you want, then move on. After about 3 p.m. head over to Hurricane harbor if you want to. The entire complex (in summer) closes at 10 p.m. The park is closed from November through most of March. Before June, not all of the rides are open and so the best time to go is from late June through October.
Six Flags is now the largest amusement park operator in the U.S., and Six Flags Great Adventure is the largest park of the whole Six Flags chain. Like several other Six Flags theme parks, it is located between two major metropolitan areas - in this case, New York and Philadelphia - and is easy to reach for residents of both cities. It owns more rides than any other theme park in the world, and is the most popular tourist destination in New Jersey.
