Shenyang City - the Place to Discover Chinese Traditions, History and Culture

Shenyang is a historically and culturally famous city and it is the center of politics, economics, culture and tourism in Northeast China. With a population of about seven million people Shenyang is China's forth largest city. Each year thousands of tourists are drawn here in order to discover the celebrated old city with more than 2,000 years of history.

Shenyang City is located in the northern part of Northeast China and is the central part of the Liaoning Province. This area of the city is 13,008 square kilometers with an urban area of 3,495 kilometers. Most of the Shenyang region rests on a plain that stretches out flat. The mountains and the highlands are mostly concentrated in the southeast part which belongs to the extended part of the Liaodong mountainous highlands. The western part of Shenyang is the alluvial plain that is washed over by The Liao River and the Hun River. Within Shenyang City there is the Liao River, Hun River, North Sha River, Xinkai River, and South Canal.

Shenzhou was set up in the Liao Dynasty in 960 to 1127 and is surrounded by earthen walls. This was the start of Shenyang City. The city continued to use the name in the Jin Dynasty in 1127 to 1279. And, in the Yuan Dynasty the city was rebuilt and renamed Shenyang Lu. In 1634, Huang Tai Ji, the Tai Zong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty worshiped Shenyang as Shenjing and it became the capital of the Qing Dynasty. Shenyang became an accompanying capital. After Qing united all of China in 1657, it formed the Fengtain Government in Shenyang. In 1945, the city reclaimed the name Shenyang. There are many cultural relics that symbolize the prosperity and the subsequent decline of China's last feudal dynasty. The most famous of these structures in the Shenyang Imperial Palace that is of a great historical and artistic significance and it is second only to the Forbidden City in Beijing. To the extent of its preservation Fuling Tomb and Zhaoling Tomb are two other famous imperial structures of the Qing Dynasty.

Being one of China's important industrial centers, Shenyang City is considered to be an economic and scientific powerhouse. The city has built up an all inclusive and comprehensive industrial system comprising machine building as its chief branch, metallurgy, light industry, textiles, building materials, electronics, foodstuffs, and much more. Its major agricultural crops are corn, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, rice, cotton, tobacco, and peanuts.

Shenyang City has the largest concentration and distribution center for goods and materials in Northeast China and the key communication hub of railways as well the road transportation hub in the Liaoning Province. It has the biggest civil airport in Northeast China providing regular air service to over forty in China and abroad. Shenyang has a temperate climate with an average annual temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius, rainfall of 734 millimeters, and a frost free period of 159 days. It is rich in coal, petroleum, iron, and natural gas resources, in addition to limestone, marble, and pearlite.

Shenyang's tourism industry is heading towards industrialization. The city's functions have been greatly improved and a solid basis for Shenyang's tourist to develop towards international status has been laid.
