Share the values of American West at a guest ranch

Added: 01/30/2006

When the time is measured by a horse?s clip-clopping pace, you can renew family relationships and build memories, so treasured by your children, that they will want to relive them with their children. Step away from your whirlwind schedule and explore a vacation, where you choose your own pace of invigorating leisure or relaxing fun, a dude and guest ranch vacation.

The American West holds a special place in the hearts of millions all over the world.  Being a cowboy is not about what you wear, how you walk or what kind of job you have.  Being a cowboy is a state of mind and heart, where the West is still alive.  Guest ranches are extremely proud to be preserving a part of the country's Ranching Tradition. They are more than a sabbatical from the daily grind, they are an escape to a place, where a family, relaxation and old west excitement marry together to create an unforgettable adventure.

From nearly any evening, a vantage point at a guest ranch, you can watch the mountains and cliffs gradually turn from yellow to orange to startling red in the light of the setting sun.  In every season you will share a good company, breathtaking vistas, exciting horseback rides on seasoned horses, satisfying meals and the Milky Way, spread across the night sky.

They say that mountains change people: give a room to breathe and bring them closer together in a way that is unparalleled. A guest ranch is a place, where not only precious memories are made, but parents become heroes in the eyes of their children. Experience the cowboy way of life, where there is no clock, dictating your day, and your horse is your new best friend. Watch your children trade television for the love of riding and fresh air escapades in the playground of the Rocky Mountains. Come and experience a world, where the most valuable commodities are a family and flourishes. Be romanced by the mountains and cared for like the closest of kin.

What is a guest ranch alike? Comparing with hotels, each accommodation here is unique. All the ranches are modern, but they may be old historic or even rustic. That is what makes them special. A guest ranch is built to keep families together in lodging that provides individual sleeping rooms, joined to a central living area (some with fireplaces) and other sleeping rooms.  Most of them offer comfy beds, a western room decor and amenities you would expect at any fine lodging establishment, such as soft towels, soap and shampoos. Some even include mini-refrigerators, coffee makers or snacks in your room. Each guest ranch is regularly inspected for cleanliness, neatness and adherence to the strict standards, as every dude ranch greatly values its reputation and visitors.

Among the most popular ranch activities, the first place is undoubtedly takes horseback riding. There is nothing more relaxing and fun than letting a well-trained horse take you into the high country. Additional horseback activities contain cattle roundups, team penning, horseback gymkhanas, overnight pack trips and family rodeos. At ranches there are dozens of trails to explore on foot, as well as on horseback. Take peaceful walks with your spouse and children or choose hikes with guides, knowledgeable about the local history and the ranch?s plants, birds and wildlife.

If there is one activity, more relaxing and fun than horseback riding, it might be fishing. Almost everyone can fish, regardless of age or experience, and ranches present fishing for all abilities. In fact, fly fishing is becoming a specialty along with horseback riding at some of dude ranches. Most of the ranches stock their own ponds or are near local streams and lakes, where the ranch staff can advise you on the hotspots and where you are most likely to find fish. Ranching and cattle also go hand in hand. Many of today's dude ranches evolved from cattle operations years back. The others were conceived and built as destinations in their own right, but comprise activities with cattle in their programs.
