Secrets of Train Tickets

Added: 02/20/2006

You decided to travel by train cause it is comfortable, cheap and fast. Of course it all depends, but still speaking about Europe and its countries , traveling by train is the most convenient. Besides, this is practically the main type of transport where there is so big number of price minimization services and all of them of course connected with the ticket. Well, any ticket is a voucher to indicate that you paid for admission to the very train.

Train tickets may vary both in form and in the use, some having wider period of  validity or smaller range of directions. Nevertheless, train ticket is a valuable piece of paper which gives you  a right to get to a certain place,  and this  paper scrap can cause some serious problems or otherwise can save you a great deal of money if to know some tips. First of all, before buying train ticket shop around, because many agents offer a variety of bonuses (like free planning maps or even a guide book). Generally train ticket in Europe allows you to board any train, but  no one will guarantee you a seat, couchette or sleeper berth, and  high-speed trains may even require a supplement. Where applicable, a ticket may be for an arbitrary seat ("free seating") or for a specific one. For  train journeys one can either just buy a ticket or also a seat reservation.  You  may save money and travel days by purchasing separate train tickets for shorter trips. So instead of using one travel day  you can also buy a 2nd class ticket  and save your travel day for a night train or longer journey, in case you have plenty of time. If you are pressed for time, or maybe just not wish change trains, remember that  train tickets which are bought in advance  can be much cheaper than tickets bought on the day of travel as well as "day return" tickets are cheaper than train tickets which allow you to return on a different day. As for the UK  train tickets can cost much less than necessary, if the train leaves after the rush-hour has finished (eg 09:30 or 10:00).  If you travel by a group, you can try to apply for discounts, though it is not always available.  And in case you use train more frequent than once/ twice a year, rail pass is just the thing. A rail pass is a kind of  reusable train ticket admitted practically in all the countries. But note that if you are traveling through a country that is not listed on your railpass you will have to pay the full fare for that portion of the trip.
Anyway  nothing prevents you from buying  an extra  train ticket for this part of railway, still it will be cheaper than that fee. Before boarding make sure that your rail pass or travel ticket  is validated the first time you use it at a train ticket office.  Many railway  stations in major cities provide helpful offices which will validate your pass and answer any questions regarding using it.  Watch your train ticket, do not  write anything on your pass before validation as  the ticket agent will do this for you. A Young Persons Railcard may give you a reduction of about a third on the price of  train  tickets but in case  you are a full-time student  or any person aged between 16 and 25.  But still, it is better to book both train and ferry tickets online, as it gives you an opportunity to clear all the possible questions before starting your journey. With the overwhelming range of discounted ferry tickets and discounted train tickets, you are sure to bear your travel with as less trouble as possible.
