Sailing yachts -the choice is amazing

Added: 12/30/2005

There are yacht builders catering for every type of yacht from small light-weight yachts up to massive ocean going yachts. Whether you are seeking a relaxing yacht charter on a crewed sailing yacht, or a bareboat that you skipper yourself, the choice is amazing. The yacht you buy should provide a high level of safety for the way you use it. If you race rather than cruise, then speed becomes the prime consideration. And some cruising sailors cannot be happy unless their sailing yachts are fast. If leaving other sailors in your wake is all-important to you, limit your search to boats known for their performance.

There are yacht builders catering for every type of yacht from small light-weight yachts up to massive ocean going yachts. Standard models are obviously cheaper than custom built, and there are building yards that will be happy to show you their workmanship. There are those who welcome the opportunity to work with a client's personal yacht designer or who can provide suggestions on yacht designers we know are reputable and suitable for specific projects.

There are also builders available that build semi-custom sailing yachts in a cost efficient manner where high standards of interior fit and finish are recognized and appreciated. This approach to yacht construction gives the benefits of a custom design without the high costs and lengthy construction cycles normally associated with a custom yacht project.

The aim of all is to build the ultimate personal sailing yacht that delivers ease of handling, calm local water sailing or world class performance, and from economic interiors to the ultimate in luxury finishing.

Hulls are available that are constructed using foam core, E-glass, Kevlar, carbon fibre, vinylester or epoxy resins, wood, and steel, while spars can be chosen from wood, aluminium, and carbon fibre.

Whether your interest is for gaff rigged, ketch or a sloop or indeed any style of classic sailer, there are sailing yachts available to suit every taste. As well as original classic sailing yachts there are some excellent builders who reproduce classic sailing boats from a bygone age.

Whether you are seeking a relaxing yacht charter on a crewed sailing yacht, or a bareboat that you skipper yourself, the choice is amazing. You can cruise through the fjords on luxurious sailing yachts, relax in the sun on your own private yacht, sail in the Caribbean, and even take part in hairy racing. Crewed yacht rates vary with size of yachts, numbers of people, plus options and inclusions.

You can buy a yacht to club race now, then sail around the world in later, but it will only do one or the other-or neither-well. Whatever your idea of a fine-looking vessel is, that should be the starting point in your search. If speed is not already important to you, don't let someone discourage you from buying a yacht you like because it is "slow." Decide how much you can comfortably spend on sailing- the operative word here being comfortably-then hold yourself to that amount. Limit your aspirations for that first yacht to how you will use it now. Seaworthiness is relative.

But where sailboats are concerned, fast is a relative term. On a typical day sail, the fastest boat in the fleet, given equivalent waterline lengths, will still be setting the anchor when the slowest boat arrives. If speed is not already important to you, don't let someone discourage you from buying a boat you like because it is "slow."
