With its countless opportunities for great recreation, the Rocky Mountains region is a renowned destination all-the-year-round. In summer, the major attractions include the Royal Gorge, Pikes Peak, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Glacier National Park, Rocky Mountains National Park, Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park and more. In winter, Rocky Mountains vacations are popular due to the extensive facilities for skiing. Among the major ski resorts are Vail, Keystone (Colorado), Sun Valley (Idaho), Big Mountain (Montana), Park City (Utah) and Lake Louise (Alberta). January is the coldest month in the Rockies with an average temperature -14 C. Summers are generally warm and dry with July being the hottest month. However, tourists on Rocky Mountains vacations should keep in mind that the weather is unpredictable here, changing rapidly, and sometimes spoiling vacationers' plans.
One of the greatest of the four season attractions, the Rocky Mountain National Park is unique in its own way, not just because of its breathtaking landscapes, but mainly because of its diverse terrain. Seen as an excellent wildlife viewing area, the park has a habitat of elk, mule deer, coyotes, moose, river otters, small mammals and bighorn sheep. One of the positive aspects of visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park is the possibility to be able to experience it in many various ways and levels. While some of the adventurous tourists will enjoy the challenging hiking trails, the more curious vacationers can take advantage of the opportunity to examine the geologic history of the park, as well as watching rare animal and plant species. However, you may want to ignore the educational and recreational aspects and just take in the beauty of the park. Owing to the Trail Ridge Road and its superb trail system, providing a great number of different levels of hikes, the Rocky Mountain National Park is, perhaps, the most accessible park of the West. Being absorbed in the Park's natural world, you'll enjoy scenic drives, panoramic vistas, guided tours and experienced park rangers, which will help you make the most of Rocky Mountains vacations. Of course, it's impossible to visit every corner of the park, even on the longest vacation.
Some of the sites, however, that must be seen by all means, include the Eugenia Mine, the Holzwarth Trout Lodge Historic Site, the Old Fall River Road, and more. The park, however, has neither lodging nor full service dining establishments. Tourists on Rocky Mountains vacations can take advantage of commercial campgrounds - the Elk Creek Campground and RV Park, located just outside the park. Available here are horseback riding, a championship golf course, trout fishing, game rooms, a playground, a laundry and a store. Cross country ski and snowmobile trails can be found nearby. Located in close proximity to the Beaver Meadows entrance of the national park, the Elk Meadow Lodge & RV Park boasts of some historic buildings, in addition to its seven convenient cabins. With the park on two sides, Estes Park Campground offers fantastic views and complete serenity. The majority of campsites is located among pine trees, and is especially popular among pickup campers.
