In North Carolina you'll have to choose sides - the mountains or the coast. Because these best two features lie on the far east and west boundaries of the state, separated by more than 400 kilometers of middle ground, it's impossible to see them both during a short vacation. So, make two visits or one very long one and gaze over misty valleys from a mountain peak and admire the arc of the shoreline from a sand dune plus see the attractions of North Carolina cities.
Raleigh, North Carolina's capital stands at the very heart of the state, focusing around the central Capitol Square. The Capitol is worth a look to see the copy of Canova's bizarre statue of George Washington in Roman garb. Visit North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences which looks at local geology, as well as animal and plant life, going all the way back to the dinosaur age. Check out the local artists and sculptors at work in Artspace and the four-block City Market, that's arranged around Martin Street and Moore Square and holds a number of good shops and restaurants. North of town is the Mordecai Historic Park where you can see the Mordecai House, built by a wealthy plantation-owner and continuously inhabited by the same family for two centuries.
The impressive North Carolina Museum of Art has an eclectic display of works from Africa, Europe and the US. It also boasts the particularly good Blue Ridge Restaurant.
Greensboro, North Carolina, is a place worth visiting. Located in Guilford County, it is the largest city in the Piedmont Triad region. Greensboro is located at the intersection of two interstate highways region in central North Carolina. In 1808, Greensboro was a planned town to replace Guilford Court House as the county seat. This act moved the county courts to near the geographical center of the county.
The town is home to several universities and colleges. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Guilford College, Bennett College, and Greensboro College all call Greensboro home. In addition, the state community college system has several campuses for Guilford Technical Community College. Greensboro is also the home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball club of the South Atlantic League. The Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, one of the oldest national PGA Tour golf events, is held in Greensboro every fall at Forest Oaks Country Club.
Greensboro Parks and Recreation operates more than 170 parks and facilities for people of all ages and abilities, and from all walks of life. The Greensboro Historical Museum lets you discover the rich history of the Piedmont area. Any of the seven Greensboro Public Library locations are open to visit for research, leisure reading or informative programs for adults and children.
For some entertainment visit the Greensboro Coliseum. It brings trade shows, top entertainment and sporting events to the area.
