Racing boats are a type of boats. I think that everybody knows that besides racing boats there are also fishing boats, power boats, and sail boats. It is obviously that first boats were used for fishing and transporting via water form one place to another one. Racing boats appeared much more later when man moved to another step of evolution. Some people have chosen racing as their hobby while for others it is the way of earning money to live on. The last category is sport professionals.
To describe a boat in simple words we can say that it is a watercraft usually smaller than a yacht and definitely smaller than a ship. Consequently, racing boats for sale will cost much less than racing yachts for sale. Racing boat consists of a buoyancy structure called a hull and some systems of propulsion such as screw, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail paddlewheels or a water jet.
There are boat building companies that specialize in racing boats. But just a racing boat is not all that is important for racing competition. Shells, oars, paddles, skulls, and blades do also play an important role when racing sailors compete with each other. Some companies make only some parts.
For example, RACE1 is an Australian based company that designs, builds and exports high quality racing shells around the world. RACE1 Australia commenced manufacture of hand built timber, racing shells in 1975, utilizing traditional methods and materials. In 1976, the transition to fiberglass boats was made and in 1978, the company pioneered the manufacture of male-moulded composite racing shells. In 1984, export of racing shells from Australia commenced with orders from UK, Europe and the USA. From the early 90's work continued to towards development of the "optimum boat".
Racing boats differ between themselves depending on what competitions they take part in. The thing is that different racing competitions make different requirements to racing boats. For example, Olympic racing boats should fulfill the following requirements:
- 100% Carbon Fibre
- Monocoque construction
- High modulus, carbon fibre
- Nomex honeycomb core
- Winged riggers standard
- Exclusive comfort design padded seats
For club racing boats the requirements are less strict:
- Monocoque construction
- Carbon fibre / glass fibre
- High density, impact resistant foam core
- Laminated timber foot boards with lambs wool lined, foot straps
- Winged riggers standard
Racing boats should be properly maintained. They should have an entire inspection, clean-up and lube job, especially if you sail in salt water. This should be done before storing the boat for periods longer than a week or two.
Apply grease to all the metal parts that fit or bolt together. (Spray-on oils, although convenient, do not last nearly as long and their solvents may actually wash heavier oils away.) These metal parts include the seat wheel bearings, lockplates, pins, wing rigger thumb screws. Take the parts apart to lube them, this will keep them easy to adjust in the future.
Minor scratches can be repaired with standard automotive polishing compound. Major scratches, usually the result of surprise meetings with a log, rock or dock, may require filling to retain a perfect hull finish.
