Port Vila is for nature and ocean lovers

Added: 06/16/2006

Port Vila is a serene and elegant capital of Vanuatu. Its nightlife is sleepy and cultural attractions are scarce. Nevertheless, it is a developed center for recreational and eco tourism offering unspoiled waters and coastline, clean beaches, wonderful opportunities for water sports and excellent resorts. In addition, Port Vila is a paradise for gourmets and serves a variety of cuisines in over twenty restaurants.

Vanuatu travel is centered on the islands of Efat, Tanna and Espiritu Santo. International visitors arrive in Port-Vila, Vanuatu capital on Efat, and from here can travel by boat or plane to explore the rest of the country and its natural wonders.

Port Vila is set within a splendid natural harbor. It consists of modern buildings, cozy restaurants and elegant shops and its natural beauty is not shaded by huge figures of skyscrapers and office blocks.

Right in the middle of Port Vila are the markets, which are definitely worth visiting. They are open every day except Sunday and you can buy everything from fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood to woodcarvings, jewelry and clothing.

There are over twenty restaurants in Port Vila to satisfy your dining preferences. Chinese, French, Melanesian, and English cuisines have obtained local flavors and unforgettable tastes in the kitchens of professional Port Vila chefs. Some restaurants offer local or foreign musicians. There is also one nightclub and one movie theater in the town.

Port Vila is a developed tourist center and home to dreamy places to stay. Excellent hotels and resorts are designed to the latest fashion and cater for quiet and relaxed holidays. The staff is always nice and helpful and the settings are picturesque and romantic.

Beach and island resorts offer visitors golf facilities and horseback riding, bathing in hot mineral spring and viewing marvelous cascading waterfalls. Tennis, poker machines and casinos are available in most resorts.

Surprisingly, this tiny town is home to the Cultural Center, which is one of the most extensive Pacific artifact collections in the world. There is also the Museum and Art Gallery, which displays exhibits on Vanuatu's geology, history and traditions such as arrow points made from human bones, ritual bludgeons for killing pigs, and carvings brought from around Vanuatu.

Port Vila offers plenty of opportunities for water sports such as snorkeling, swimming, fishing and renowned Vanuatu diving and all major and challenging dives are located next to or in close proximity to the town. Vanuatu's underwater world is filled with World War shipwrecks, beautiful coral reefs, teams of colorful fish, amazing caves and canyons.

Local tour operators, who have carefully studied all possible ways to entertain and amuse Vanuatu tourists, organize sailboat trips, yacht cruises, plane flights and nature walks in the company of local guides.

Plane tours are wonderful. The bird's-eye view of the town, surrounding islands, coral reefs, lagoons, beaches, dolphins and turtles in the ocean subdues even the most discernable traveler.

From Port Vila it is easy to reach Tanna Island with its famous and easily accessible active volcano Yasur. The volcano shows small explosions day and night, but sometimes offers the views of bright spectacular explosions throwing hot lava high into the sky. The visitors are allowed and it is safe to stay right on the summit of the active volcano and enjoy its incredible views.
