Sixteen miles of natural sandy beach, a virgin mangrove-fringed lagoon, a wilderness of coral-studded cayes, nearby Jungle Rivers, and pristine rainforest, Garifuna, Creole and Mayan cultures, and ancient Maya ruins make Placencia the ideal location for the adventure traveler and placencia weekend . There are so many offers how to spend time there that if you are going there just for placencia weekend you should plan before what is more desirable for you.
Placencia is a paradise for the nature lover in you, as its knowledgeable guides, will show you. While having placencia weekend start by exploring the beauty of the abundance of plants and flowers, and the birds, butterflies and iguanas they attract throughout the peninsula.
Guests can kayak the mangroves in tranquil lagoon and perhaps you will be lucky enough to spot the manatees who live here. And if you are one of the many adventure travelers who come to Placencia (getting around Belize), you can do the cayes by kayak, camping along the way on the unspoiled islands that dot the horizon from there to the reef and back again. Or you can hire a boat down by the dock and take a trip to Monkey River where you will see our famous Howler Monkeys, iguanas, and maybe even a crocodile or two along the river shore - that is to have a real placencia weekend adventure.
If your pleasure during placencia weekend is a more leisurely trip around the uncrowded waters, there are sailing options from catamarans available with or without a crew, to private sailboats for day-sailing or overnights, complete with captain and catering.
When you've exhausted all the wonderful options around the peninsula, expand your horizons with a tour to the nearby Mayan Ruins of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit, Cave tours, or explore the jungle trails through Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary - the world's first Jaguar Reserve.
Placencia prides itself as having some of the best diving in Belize. This area is rapidly becoming one of the hottest diving spots in the Caribbean region. Here dive sites are more pristine because they have felt less impact from boats and divers.
As the Belize Barrier Reef progresses southward along the coast, the reef begins to separate further from the mainland. These results in substantial patches of coral reef, separated by channels dropping to 80 feet or more, forming canyon like walls which rise sharply to form shoals and cayes.
This provides shallow sites for snorkelers, while at the same time allowing divers access to nearby sites in deeper waters. Tropical fish such as giant jewfish, stingrays and massive amounts of soft and hard corals abound. Dolphins may provide you a rare opportunity to swim with them (If they are in the mood). So if you are lucky when return in the office after spending such weekend there is big chance to imagine that your trip was just a dream.
Some of the most spectacular, unspoiled snorkeling spots that the Caribbean has to offer are experienced in this area. Fewer boats are seen here, compared to more populated areas in the Caribbean, therefore the coral formations are well preserved. Southern Belize is renowned for its invertebrate life, hard and soft corals, migrating whale sharks in April and June and seasonal spawning snapper.
