Pierre, South Dakota -- Return to the Where the Old West Begins

Pierre is a typical South Dakota town, with 15,000 residents and serving as the seat of state government. It's only two driving hours from the Badlands and four from Mount Rushmore - and an easy air connection from anywhere in the world. After visiting Pierre you might find it a great place to live, play, and do business. One thing is certain, whatever your pursuits are, Pierre is where the Old West begins!

Fort Pierre is located in the heart of South Dakota, on the Missouri River, just a few miles from the geographical center of North America.  When you cross the Missouri River, the West really begins. From Buffalo ranching at Triple U, the film site for Kevin Costner's movie, Dances with Wolves, to the largest barn-sale in five states, Fort Pierre is the place you don't want to miss.

Pierre is the second smallest and by far the least sophisticated of all the US state capitals. There are no plush hotels or fancy restaurants catering to power-broking politicos that you find in other capital cities.

During your visit in Fort Pierre you'll have the opportunity to see many sites and attractions. The black-domed Capitol sits in a pleasant park at the northeast edge of downtown and is open for tours. The worthwhile Cultural Heritage Center located high on a hill, half a mile north of the capitol, and modeled on traditional Plains Indian dwellings. The repository for the usual barrage of pioneer implements and prehistoric artifacts, the museum represents the state's significant Native American cultures. Sioux Avenue holds the bulk of the town's motels, including the clean and comfortable Governor's Inn. Rollins Library at 1000 Church Street near the Capitol provides internet access.

With world-class pheasant hunting and walleye fishing, the country-side has not changed much from the days of nation's newest land purchase for President Thomas Jefferson. Enjoy great hunting and great fishing year-round. Catch walleye, Chinook salmon, large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, rainbow trout and catfish. If you're here just for the hunting you can enjoy many different waterfowl, pheasants, big game, prairie chicken and sharp-tail grouse. Fort Pierre offers easy access to boat ramps, campgrounds and convenience stores.

You'll find more than 116,000 acres of native mixed-grass prairie and abundant wildlife at Fort Pierre National Grasslands, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Willow Creek Wildlife, Inc. is located just 12 miles west of Fort Pierre. You'll find variety of things to do here hunting - small game and big game, sporting clays and skeet shooting.

Expo Center Hockey Rink is a 46,000 square foot building available for hockey, figure skating and open skating from October - March and expositions, bull-a-ramas and other events April - September.
