Part time MBA ? the purpose, process and result

Added: 10/14/2005

General full time MBA programs, offered by top business schools, are specially designed to prepare high level specialists in the world of business, ready to run the leading business corporations and foreseeing the most urgent business issues to each detail. However, there are people, who want to study and cannot afford to leave their place of work. The part time MBA program is an excellent solution to the problem.

The part time MBA programs are specially designed for those, who would like to combine their studies with their work responsibilities and are of great value for moving ahead from the current position in the company or making a career change. The programs usually take three or four years to complete, which is longer than to complete a full time MBA program, however, the studies cover practically the same curriculum, as the full time MBA program does. Moreover, the students with undergraduate degrees in business can sometimes place out of a number of courses, thus, shortening the process.

One of the admission requirements of the part time MBA programs is at least three years of working experience; some business schools admit students with less.

The part time MBA is of great help to a faster promotion in the company not only due to your future degree, also for the reason that part time students have the chance to immediately apply their daily lessons to the job, thus, enhancing their skills and showing greater zeal than the others. The part time MBA studies are such a practical education that once you have a lecture, you are able to apply it the next morning. The result is that the information you obtain and learn is not forgotten as it is in constant practice at your job accomplishment.

The part time MBA programs are also suggested as distant learning programs, which allow you to complete the program from your home office. All what you need is a high-speed internet access and you will have the comfort of not going back and forth to the campus after your working day.

Nevertheless, along with the advantages, the part time MBA studies have their drawbacks. Certainly, there is much more pressure on those, who take evening MBA programs, as they have to study harder after a full day working. In addition, not all the programs offer the same MBA degree for full time and part time students and allow on-campus recruiting. It means that some schools allow all MBA students to look for a job in their career center's resources, however, do not permit part time students to interview through the school. It is not difficult to explain this drawback, as in fact, corporations, the part time students are working for, sponsor them and business schools try to maintain both sides of this relationship. How will it look like if the school first accepts the tuition fees from the company, and then helps their employee to find another job?

In spite of this, this problem comes to a solution, when a part time student is able to inform his employer and the employer allows him to interview for a job.

Nevertheless, the fact is that the business schools invite top firms to interview the students and their primary choice is a full time student. That is the reason why if you actually want to work with one of the most prosperous and prestigious companies, you should quit your job, forget everything and take all the efforts to succeed in a full time MBA program. Still, it is not easy due to the competition. That is another reason why the part time MBA is generally regarded as the way to improve your skills and find higher ranks in the company, which employs you presently and gives you a possibility to study for a better position.
