In its purest sense, sustainable tourism is an industry that strives to make a significant impact on the local culture and environment, while assisting to generate income and conservation of the local ecosystems.

The Green Tourism Organization is a non profit organization that collaborates with environmental groups, businesses, government agencies, and cultural organizations to develop and promote the green tourist industry in the Toronto region that involves an industry that is ecologically sound and fosters a respect for and an appreciation of cultural heritage. Today, the Green Tourism Association claims to be the only organization worldwide to focus on urban green tourism.
