Owned and operated by the independent organization Foundation for Environmental Education, the Blue Flag is an eco label awarded to some 3,100 marinas and beaches in nearly 35 countries of Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the Caribbean and Europe as of 2005. It works towards beach development through standards dealing with environmental management, environmental education, safety and water quality. Blue Flag beaches are freshwater recreational bodies or marinas, which have succeeded in meeting strict criteria during the previous bathing season. Currently the Blue Flag is awarded to marinas and beaches in over 30 countries in the Caribbean, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and Europe, based on criteria and standards owned and operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education - an independent non-profit organization.
