Negril Winter Vacations - Jamaica's Paradise

Added: 09/28/2005

Negril is the breathtaking natural beauty and unique place to visit. Laid-back spirit of Negril mingled seamlessly with the Caribbean luxury and attention to details that has made the name Sandals synonymous with a whole new level of all-inclusive opulence and service. This is really a magical place which was designed to mirror the glorious surroundings without disturbing even one palm frond, and where you can truly experience the wonders of unspoiled beach and lush gardens as only Adam and Eve could have.

On the arid western tip of Jamaica, Negril has had a reputation for bacchanalia, hedonism, marijuana smoking, and nude bathing since hippies discovered its sunny shores during the 1960s. The resort became more mainstream during the early 1990s as big-money capitalists built megaresorts, most of them managed by SuperClubs or Sandals. Yet some resorts still reserve stretches of beach for nude bathers, and illegal ganja is still peddled openly.

Clothed or unclothed, visitors are drawn to white Seven Mile Beach and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Jamaica. Opening onto a tranquil lagoon protected by a coral reef, the beach here is set against a backdrop of sea grapes and coconut palms. The low-rise resorts blend gracefully into the flat, sandy landscape.

There are really two Negrils. The West End is the site of modest cottages and character-filled local restaurants. The other Negril is on the East End, along the road from Montego Bay; the best hotels line this panoramic beachfront. The town center itself offers little of interest.

Nothing is a problem in Jamaica paradise where reggae, romance and the Caribbean sun come together. Land in the bustling tourist center of Montego Bay and discover a variety of great beaches, attractions and shops. For a more laid-back atmosphere, head to the seven miles of spectacular beach in Negril. Or stay in lively Ocho Rios and climb the 700 foot cascading waterfalls at Dunn's River Falls. Falmouth, Braco and Runaway Bay are growing resort areas that offer popular hotels and fabulous all-inclusive resorts. Wherever you go on this island paradise, the friendly smiles of the Jamaican people will make you come back here again and again.

The more affluent landowners were worried about Negril becoming a "Hippie Haven", but the simbiosis proved to benefit all parties and a unique character of free-spiritedness was established. Negril is still not the busiest place around, but has taken the leading role in environmental issues, such as the establishment of marine parks, and several eco-friendly development projects. Over the years, within a little more than two decades Negril has changed from deserted fishing beach to a full-blown resort town.

There are so many places at Negril from where to watch these splendid sunsets. Sip your papaya daiquiri as you watch the sunset over the Caribbean: the bars and clubs have both the ambiance and the fruity drinks to make your Caribbean adventure a success. For tourists looking for a night out in the town, many restaurants offer  genuine cultural experience, featuring the freshest seafood the Caribbean has to offer, night shows, and live reggae music.

Explore the deep sea fishing, and get that one fish of your life. Climb over Negril Cliffs which are located on Negril's West End. To feel yourself in the Neptune's kingdom, visit the Throne Room, the underwater cavern, whose walls are covered with yellow sponges. Bike tours of the Jamaican countryside are available for all levels of ability.

The famous seven-mile stretch of golden sand - Seven Mile Beach was once haunted by Pirates beach, but now ruled by pleasure-seeking beach bums and sun-worshipers.
